Samsung Galaxy S3 Mobile Data/Wifi usage

Recommended Posts

On my phone when I am using mobile data and have no wifi at the top of the screen it shows that I am using 4G or 3G and says that on that top bar near where it shows the battery usage and stuff. BUT when I still have my mobile data on but I am using wifi, the 4G or 3G at the top of the screen goes away and is replaced with a wifi signal. I always keep my mobile data on so that if the wifi goes out, I can still use mobile data or if I leave the place with wifi, I do not need to turn mobile data back on since I can just keep it on and when my phone is connected to wifi, it will use the wifi instead of the 4G EVEN if the mobile data is on.

However, after after I did the most recent update for my phone, yesterday and today when I have my mobile data on like always, and I was home using the wifi in the top bar of the screen BOTH the wifi signal and the 3G signal appeared at the top.

The first picture attached shows how it used to look at the top bar when I had mobile data on but was connected to wifi.

The second picture shows how it looks NOW when I have mobile data on and also connected to wifi. Why does it NOW show both? Is it using both? I wasnt trying to receive an MMS message so there is no reason for it to not be using the wifi since i had a strong wifi connection. How do I get it to not do this? I dont want it to use my mobile data when I have wifi available! How do i make sure its using the wifi withou having to turn the mobile data on and off when I have wifi? I never had this problem before!

PLEASE HELP!

My wife (who has the galaxy 2) always turns her data off when she is on Wifi - that way you won't be surprised with the bill. I think the only reason the 3g is not in the top picture is that it probably was not detected.

I have had this phone since November 2012 and it never before showed the 3G or 4G while I was connected to the wifi. the wifi symbol would replace those symbols since wifi was being used and not mobile data. I dont need to turn off my data, i have 2GB which is more than enough

I've noticed this will happen on my phone sometimes. I usually just turn off WiFi and try and turn it back on and it corrects itself. I'm guessing it's because it's not correctly connected to WiFi.

You should be watching the upload/download activity arrows below the WiFi and 3G/4G icons. As long as you're seeing activity on the WiFi ones, and not the 3G/4G ones, you're fine. On my One X using stock Sense, the 4G icon is always present, even if mobile data or WiFi are turned off.

your phone is likely using the messaging app on the cellular network and thats what with the new update you are seeing. stock messaging does not use wifi so you may see both icons

My GPS is always on and my data is always on. I have a 4gb data limit and do not even come close to that. I dont see how people are using so much data if they are not download/streaming anything. I am connect via wifi at home and work as well but dont have any problems with my data being used over wifi tho.

The only time I have seen the 4g symbol when wifi was connected was when my router wasnt working correctly or if there were internet issues. But that its obvious to tell since the wifi symbol darkens a little (for me it turns from white to gray)

I have been having a very similar issue with my Galaxy S3. I have had it just over a year, and throughout that time, I have always had wifi and mobile data on. Like the first person posted, it's just easier to be connected to both so when you leave a wifi zone, you may still access mobile data. Starting about 2 weeks ago, I realized that I am unable to connect to WIFI while connected to mobile data. While not a huge issue, it is fairly inconvient to constantly switch my mobile data on and off. If I am in a WIFI zone, and do NOT turn off mobile data, it uses my 4G and therefore uses my data usage. I haven't changed any settings, and rarely use any apps other than a few sports apps. Does anyone have any help/suggestions?

Thank you!
