Policy on posting crowdfunding links...

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I had a friend who is in need of some help crowdfunding something, and I was curious if it was against the rules to post a thread here to try and garner support for her. I won't go into details, but I want to make sure that it's allowed and really follow the rules on the forum. Question is basically this...

Am I allowed to post a crowdfunding link, in a related topic that I create to try and get help from the Neowin community on something for my friend? The crowdfunding page is not mine, and I am not getting anything in return for it, it's all her. What's the policy on this?

If it's just you asking for some people to help out, I personally don't see the problem; although I am not a mod so I couldn't speak for neowin.

Ask mods directly. They're actually a friendly bunch... probably.

Just note, if you are permitted (and that goes also for any other site you might want to put this) - do your friend a favor and describe what the thing (or whatever the crowdfunding's for) is, what it does, how it helps anyone - generally why should anyone bother and care. See, my college inbox gets things like these often, and from people one might think are creative and socially active, but usually there's just "please vote for this" or "please take a look at that". Sorry, you're not trying good enough. And if it's voting, be fair - describe the competition and its goals rather than just your thing. It does take away the focus but you also come ahead as an honest person that does it all for other reasons than winning.

There have been articles and links to Kickstarter projects, so I wouldn't think there would be a problem. Although as stated above, contact a mod directly for a quicker answer.

Whether or not it's you directly, it would be pimping the user base for someone else's profit which is no different than spam.

Okay, that's kind of what I thought, that's why I asked first rather than just create a thread and have it closed later, creating more drama. Not really someone else's profit, though. It was a fundme link to my friend because she's in need of a STUPID amount of money for getting four impacted wisdom teeth removed, jerkoff Dentists won't do it without upfront money, it's not even my page. >.<

That kinda sounds like an abuse of crowd funding. That's for their personal gain. Crowd funding usually ends up being beneficial for the crowd who funds it.

The best half of people in the whole damn world have no timely (or none whatsoever) access to medical services when required, mainly because of increasingly outrageous costs. This course of action is inappropriate and encourages inequality and favoritism.

Err, perhaps she should've gotten dental cover? Ah well, you can remove them for her with some pliers - have fun.

It's a rubbish state of affairs, but this isn't appropriate for crowdfunding.

http://www.justgiving.com/ might be worth checking out, but other than that I don't know of any other ways apart from working extra hours or seeking out a charity that helps cover medical costs.
