V-Tech
Samsung has remained true to its word and has cut down on storage bloat in the Galaxy S4? by a little bit, at least. SamMobile reports that a new software update gives the 16GB version of the Galaxy S4 9.23GB of usable storage, up from the 9.15GB the model had when it first rolled out. While this may not seem like much, it could be the first of many updates Samsung is working on to lighten the load of all the apps that it has preloaded onto the device. The company is pushing out the update to Galaxy S4 users in Germany first and it?s not yet clear when it will arrive for Galaxy S4 owners in the United States. http://bgr.com/2013/06/06/samsung-galaxy-s4-software-update/

Chris000001
The bigger deal is they enabled Apps2SD. I don't know why that wasn't reported.
DeadEndAccount
You know what would be really good - if they offered a complete Vanilla installation so that customers who like the hardware but don't want the bloat can go for a Vanilla installation of Android without all the Samsung 'customisations'. That's what the Google Edition phone is for. Another thing to note with this update is that it "appears" to fix the audio crackling/distortion issue that people were experiencing. I had audio distortion on my S4 when the volume level went above 9, with this update it doesn't distort at all even on full volume :) The purple smearing has been reduced too. Overall it is a pretty good update :)

+KibosJ Subscriber² Posted June 8, 2013 Subscriber² Share Posted June 8, 2013 Yeah, but you can keep all those features and be rooted too with an Touchwiz based ROM. That's what I do and at the moment I prefer it to Vanilla android :) Once android 5.0 comes out that may well change of course :p
McKay
There is one. It's called Cyanogen Mod. I have an unofficial CM running on my S4, because the i9505 isn't supported yet, sally it hadn't freed up the space taken up by the bloat.

Yeah I noticed that it didn't free any space up, so I went back to TouchWiz. I can't see anything that CyanogenMod gives me over TouchWiz. I've installed Nova Launcher and the Vanilla keyboard on my Touchwiz ROM and it is just as quick, plus I can use the features of the phone :)
DeadEndAccount
That's what the Google Edition phone is for. Which means nothing for the person who has an S4 today unless of course Samsung or Google is going to offer an official upgrade application that allows a person to upgrade their installation of Android from the Samsung customised version to the Vanilla Android. There is one. It's called Cyanogen Mod. There are so many problems with that statement I don't know where to begin; something that requires rooting ones phone then jumping through several hoops vs. what should be simply a person running an application, pluging in their phone into the computer and clicking 'upgrade' on their computer to download and do a clean install of Vanilla Android. ensiform
That's what the Google Edition phone is for. The problem with google edition phones is that they don't support Verizon or have a Verizon capable version.

Samsung has got all the bases covered with Touchwiz and I haven't find a ROM yet that has all those features.
