Is Now a Good Time to Switch?

Recommended Posts

Now outlook.com has enabled sending through a separate SMPT server then I am looking to leave Google services for good.

My stickler is my phone.

I have a Galaxy Nexus, which is great as a phone and I have got it exactly how I like it, but I am afraid if I switch then I will be leaving things behind. I've had a look in the Windows Store and a good number of the apps I have/use have replacements. A few don't, but I can live without a banking app for now, for example.

Although I couldn't find a definitive list of the exclusive Lumia apps, I know there's a few of those I would use.

But should I wait until the platform is a lot more alive? I don't want to buy something for the next couple of years which will always make me look back to Android.

The Lumia 920 is ?100 cheaper than when I first added it to my "to Buy" list on Amazon, possibly cheaper elsewhere too so it's a good time to look seriously about switching.

I don't customize either. My ROM is the standard one (although rooted), so it's not like I will be missing all that side of stuff, which I know most people opt with Android for. But then if I decide I don't like it, I guess I could always switch back after a few months.

It's hard to say for each person, really depends on what you want to do with it and what apps you are looking at using. I love the skydrive support and how it lets me share key files and pictures from my phone to my different PCs without any issue. I like the games that use Xbox Live and so on.

I'd say that if you can find the apps you need for your day to day use then switch. The new Lumia 925 looks great, and the new Lumia EOS is close it seems. Plus WP8.1 later this year should bring even more good stuff to the OS.

Good post :)

This is it. As I don't have an XBox or scrabble around putting different ROM's on my phone every 5 minutes then I am thinking I will actually get on pretty well. I am surprised how much I feel attached to my phone!

In fact, I went through my phone and got rid of loads of apps I simply don't use any more.

Things like the Bar code reader is useful but I last used it probably more than a year ago. Most of the apps I use are in-built to Windows Phone anyway (calculator, some sort of mapping/sat nav, mail). I guess I will miss the variety but I am increasingly finding apps for Android are now being built for tablets. I guess I'd miss the Amazon free app of the day, but I can shift all that over to my girlfriend's phone as she has the same.

Just not sure if I should wait for the new Lumia to bump the price of the 920 down. I don't think 925 is available over here, but I am not a fan of the metal look, although haven't actually seen it in the flesh.

More research I think.

It seems that way.

I have used 920 quite extensively and I must say, its one of the best phones in the market at the moment. For me, its hardware oozes perfection, like the iPhone 4S and Nokia N9.

In my opinion, and list, 920 is beaten by three phones. One, iPhone 5, and Nexus 4. Don't really like Nexus 4' hardware but the price and speedy updates is a point one simply cant ignore.

Now, onto the software side, I would start off by saying that the whole 'concept' of Windows Phone looks great to me. Sure, its short on some features and there are some areas, where its not quite good enough as the competition, but the overall design and performance of the UI makes up for it, in my opinion. App situation is not as bad as it looks on the paper, although I would say that Microsoft needs to do something about trial-ware, a.k.a. more free apps are needed then the paid ones.

As you said, you don't want much customization, so I'd say that you would feel at home with Windows Phone. I would suggest you try one out before going for it. Either in store or from some friend/family member who has a Windows Phone.

I would say, make a list of your top 10 or 25 most used apps and post it here. We can then discuss if you have them on WP or equivalents.

Sorry to drag this up again.

Most if not all of the apps I use have an alternative which is great.  Little worried on the app drawer being a list now, but just an alternative view I guess.

However what worries me even more is that the app drawer will get messy.  The "tips and tricks" option, is there a way to turn that off?  There was another menu item that I thought would be useless too.  In Android you could "disable" apps which would remove them from the app drawer keeping it a little tidy.

Apart from that, my test Croatian* handset seemed pretty good.  *sent back and bought a UK version for extra monies  #snob.

By app drawer - do you mean the alphabetical list? If yes, it doesn't get messy - just long. You can jump around by tapping the letters. You can uninstall everything (except OS components such as settings). I don't even know/remember what tips and tricks is. Did you try to uninstall it?
