(Y)

A lot of angry men on Neowin, it seems.

I don't think The_Decryptor was talking about Neowin. No one attacked women in this thread, as far as I'm aware.

I watched the conference and it didn't even register. I thought it was trash talk because she was fighting the producer of the game and so the fight would be unfair on her. Didn't she in the end get her own back and beat him anyway and made a joke about it?

It is just people making a mountain out of a mole hill. We have enough of this rubbish in the newspapers and news.

It looks like at the moment everybody is finding an excuse to jump on Microsoft at the moment after the whole DRM thing.

Yes, she ended up beating him but those that took offence to it conveniently ignored that fact.

It's the "Just let it happen" bit that is the most obviously a reference to rape. Would he have said that if he had been playing against a man? Maybe, but it'd still have been an evocation of a rape scenario--just a male rape scenario. He may as well have said to her, "Just lie back and think of England." :|

Yeah calling people idiots, morons and feminazis isn't insulting at all.

There have been 32 replies in this thread before this one and out of that, only 2 people used the words "morons" and "feminazis". No one used the word "idiot(s)" in this thread. Anyway, what they said isn't representative of everyone at Neowin. What you said earlier in response to The_Decryptor seemed a bit odd to me: "A lot of angry men on Neowin, it seems."

I admit, they could have used words with less negative connotations but would that change what you think? We disagree with the way some people reacted to Microsoft's E3 demonstration. That doesn't necessarily mean we're "angry" about it. And it doesn't necessarily mean we're against women (or hate them). I personally have an issue with militant feminists because they're so focused on female issues but I'm a firm supporter of gender equality (not gender inequality in favour of women as some feminists would prefer).

I don't view this as a rape joke at all. "Just let it happen" (in the context of kicking someone's butt at a fighting game) to me means "you might as well just put down the controller because I'm owning you". I don't see it as a rape joke, not even in the slightest. Don't get me started on the fight stick comment when the guy is actually using one.

How is that even a reference to rape?

Everything is a reference to rape today.

"Just let it happen"

Is that a commonly used term when one is raping?

I'd say this thread needs to check it's white male privilege, but it's probably more to do with the Scientology-esque Microsoft worship that has cropped up since around the time of the first few Windows 8 leaks.

Well personally, I've never said it...

I CAN see it in that context - when it's presented in that context.

And OK, I call it an overreaction obviously. But please follow it back logically, what do you take to be the etymology of the phrase "Just let it happen. It'll be over soon"?

I'd say this thread needs to check it's white male privilege

Oh hey, lets introduce race into the equation too. That always helps!

Having a tooth pulled?

Getting a tattoo?

I watched it live, I cringed, but I honestly didn't think rape, or even any sexual connotation.

Maybe the over soon part, but not the former. And it's CLEARLY about asserting once's dominance over another, which is what rape really is. Most rape victims (as well as rapists) when talking about the issue see it as more a violation and assertion of dominance than anything sexual.

The image is fake.

I'd say this thread needs to check it's white male privilege, but it's probably more to do with the Scientology-esque Microsoft worship that has cropped up since around the time of the first few Windows 8 leaks.

Please, this has nothing to do with "male privilege". It wouldn't have been seen as an issue if it were two men instead of a man and a woman. For that matter, it wouldn't have been an issue if a man was beaten by a woman in both matches.

Also, don't try to put a fanboy spin on this. I don't know if you're aware of the negativity surrounding Windows 8 and Xbox One. No one is against this just because it's Microsoft. I don't care if it's Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo.

Having a tooth pulled?

It's funny you mentioned that because when I was younger, my orthodontist said "This tooth is coming out, it's inevitable. It'll be over soon."

So to dominate somebody in a fighting game is akin to rape, or only when your opponent is a female?

Are we supposed to treat each other as equals, or tread on eggshells?
