Why wont games run on Windows8?

Shogun Total War runs fine on Windows 8 x64 - I would believe your issue is driver related and likely only resolved by adding a discrete card I'm afraid (as already stated).

Intel drivers are signed and definition file locked for specific versions of Windows these days so unfortunately it's very unlikely you'll get a proper solution now or in the future for your on-chip GFX solution. Windows 7 x86 32bit based Intel HD GFX drivers might install for you on Windows 8 x86 but it might not fix your issue (and may introduce further issues).

The "graphics gotcha" almost always hits the portable (laptop and notebook) crowd the hardest whenever a new OS comes out - it's far from unique to Windows, let alone Windows 8.

The big reason my (similar-age) desktop did NOT get bit by the gotcha (Intel G41 chipset, which is far older) is because I added a discrete (though old) GPU - AMD's HD5450.

It's old itself - in fact, it dates back to the tailchase of Vista - however, it's still supported, including by Windows 8.

A $30 card is sufficient for your need. Your definition of progress is, odd.

For desktop owners in this sort of pickle, I have (since the days of Windows 7) recommended AMD's HD54xx/6xx/77xx GPU families. Except for the HD7790 (which launched less than two months ago) none are abovce $120USD, even retail - in fact, most are less than $100USD, with the oldest (HD5450) even sub-$50USD. Most are PCIe x16; however, some are even PCI-bus - all are supported by Windows 7, 8, most Linux distributions, and even work in "Hacint0shes". Mine (the aforementioned HD5450) has been going strong for two years.

Why the hell are you trying to play games with an i3's graphics chip? Even if it did work it will be horrendous, in fact why fork out for 7GB of memory and not get at least an i5?
