spenser.d
So, all the countries where it sells the most. Funny they left out Japan. I'm sure it won't take long to ramp it up - they've been ramping up XBL for forever, so it probably won't take much to expand to those markets. StephenBratz
Good. Too many consoles were diverted to places like Japan on release of the 360. Because of the Japanese insistence of hating products from the rest of the world, we had to wait months before you could find them on the shelve in the US. With this, there will be more available for people that want them.
George P Global Moderator Posted June 12, 2013 Global Moderator Share Posted June 12, 2013 I think other factors come into play here, not just XBL, regional/localization of the new UI and services but also the kinect stuff, more voice control needs to support more languages as well so they're probably held back on that front for now. As for Japan, they're going to release it there later in 2014, they said as much, they're going to wait once they have more games that the Japanese want, notice how no one showed any jRPG for the new systems aside from FF15 and KH3, you can count FF14 but it's a MMO and I don't care about playing it. I take this to mean they have deals in place with the Japanese publishers for more Japanese targeted games that just aren't ready now. No need to release there till those games are ready to be sold really.

the better twin
Why should I care I dont live there? They probably dont have good enough internet for the DRM in those grey countries anyway. This is a good thing. Somehow...

ahhell
It's probably for numerous reasons. Back end infrastructure takes a long time to build up. Launching in 40 countries simultaneously wouldn't be feasible if you have to build server farms all over the world. Sure you could tap into the cloud in other parts of the world but the performance would be garbage. The whole online/cloud thing would probably increase the mountain of regulations they'd have to work through to launch in each country. It took MS 2 years to work through the red tape just to launch the Zune/music store in Canada. I can't imagine what they would have to go through to launch the xbone on a global scale. In the end, it could just come down to MS concentrating on their largest audiences so that they can have sufficient stock as well as working out the kinks before a larger rollout. Boxster17
First time a console will offer Day 1 digital downloads (AFAIK) so something has to give. The PS3 has been doing this with some titles for a while already (ie. The Last of Us launching this Friday on PSN). Quite sure the 3DS and PSVita also do this sort of stuff. Mobile gaming doesn't count because then there is whole iOS thing already.

George P Global Moderator Posted June 13, 2013 Global Moderator Share Posted June 13, 2013 Are they planning to expand to other countries in time? That's not many countries to start with. Of course they will, they're probably taking units into account as well. You could try to release in as many places as you can but not have many units out overall, or limit it a bit and have more units to sell per market. Also, I think the initial launch countries are also the ones that have support for Xbox Music and Xbox Video, but I could be a bit off. I think that also plays into it. They'll expand it to all the places the 360 supports, just not right away. Should see more markets in December I bet, remember the launch is in November. I bet on more markets opening up each month.
