Who's going to "ante up" with ReactOS?

Recommended Posts

I'm going to leave all the BS about Windows 8, either good or bad at the door in this one ladies and gentleman. I am putting my weight behind ReactOS for some very good reasons. they are not bizarre but rather reason of useability.

An added bonus is, this OS is tangible. It isn't Linux though, it DOES use the bootloader that is Open Source like Linux does. But that isn't here or there.

What is nice is, Have you purchased Microsoft Software? then you will be able to install those drivers and software you have.

The Code Audit has been done already and the code is clean of Microsoft code(that there is monumental)

But for guys like myself, I work exclusively from the desktop. I'm a photographer who uses the Adobe Photoshop CS6 from the cloud. Modern UI and touchscreen.

I need either a Dekstop system or laptop to manipulate photographs. But since windows seems to have "evolved", It is a product I cannot use for the purposes I need.

Anyone else anticipating the ReactOS?

Cheers!

I really fail to see how the modern UI prevents you from using desktop Apps.

Please, pretty please with a cherry on top, can we have one conversation without it swinging back to the dead horse we like to beat so much?

For myself, I'm not anticipating anything in the OS market, let alone ReactOS. I use various OS's depending on my needs/wants.

ReactOS has been the hobby of a few people in their spare time since it was incarnated and it will always be just that.

It is not fully compatible with windows binaries (afaik there is NO .NET support at all), no-one has ever tested the security on it and it is absolutely no where near finished.

It's great that you want to use such a niche OS and all but you really haven't got a clue if you think you're gonna be using it for your every day needs or that it's magically going to be stable.

This OS has been in "Alpha" stage for close to ten years now.

If you need Photoshop (Which runs GREAT on Windows 8), you'll need Windows or Mac OS. You're setting yourself up for hurt by trying to use this mess of bits.

Also: "ReactOS 0.3.15 is still in alpha stage, meaning it is not feature-complete and is recommended only for evaluation and testing purposes."

Why would you move to a project that's ment to simulate Windows NT 5.0 and 5.1 (which means that you can't run Photoshop CS6 on it).

ReactOS isn't going to be a fully usable OS anytime soon. Windows is a complex beast; they'd need a much larger and competent development team to get even close to feature parity with XP, let alone later versions.

Two links from the ReactOS wiki illustrate how far back the project is in comparison to Windows:

While React OS is (and most probably always will be) an alpha, it's a loable project, one I particulary admire. I dont think it will ever reach the needed maturity to compete to its contemporary window versions. However I do believe it will be the OS of choice for retrocomputing users in need of a windows xp, 2000, 98 alternative.

Install Start8. http://www.stardock....roducts/start8/

I recommend sticking with Windows 8 (improved efficiency is one of it's key features). I find it more snappier than Windows 7. You get used the Modern UI and start to appreciate it after a while. (I used to complain about it's minimalism here on Neowin, and now find Aero old-fashioned).

I think ReactOS will stay in alpha status for years to come. It would probably take another decade for it to get to a point where it can successfully emulate 80% of Windows XP's features. By then, Microsoft may have moved to a Linux kernel...

Not really anticipating it myself no. Wine, sure, it's useful when it's needed (and when it works) but you're still using your preferred OS. A Windows workalike? It's always going to be feature/API incomplete, the project is extremely slow, probably all sorts of security issues being overlooked, etc.. why bother with this when you can get the real thing that works 1000% better right now? Not much point to it outside of the "it's a neat experiment" factor. If Windows is your thing and you don't like Metro... then turn it off. It's literally click click done via a number of solutions. Or if that's just too complicated, stick with Windows 7. It's got official support until 2020... it's not going anywhere any time soon. 100% Windows compatibility.

If you want to "stick it to Microsoft" by jumping ship, then at least pick an OS that's actually going somewhere, there's OSX and a bajillion flavors of *Nix. ReactOS is fun to toy with but certainly not suitable for day to day use for a Windows environment.

do usb mass storage boot drivers exist for any modern version of windows?

Windows USB drivers have always allowed USB booting, it's Windows itself that doesn't allow it. Windows 8 allows official USB booting but only when you make a portable version (Windows To Go) that I think is restricted to the enterprise version only. There are several guides that explain which INF files to edit to have windows XP/Vista/7/8 boot from USB, good luck with the other drivers (SATA/video/audio/wifi/etc.) though.

To be honest, I'm surprised this project hasn't been cancelled yet. I have to ask, just who are they targeting by developing this? They're missing many of the tools needed to complete and support the system.

It's not just about making something that is 100% complete, working on something like this shows you have a great deal of understanding of OS's and hardware and API's and whatnot and is a very good way to show off and get a job.

No, software houses. Lots of people that work on FOSS in their spare time have jobs are large companies writing software. Think google summer of code too.

I tried this, and having a USB keyboard and mouse for some reason crashed the live CD on boot
