ISPs to include porn filters as default in the UK by 2014

This is just stupid, if they're doing this to help kids as there's problem, then what the hell are the parents doing. Seems to me the porn issue is more an education issue that filtering is not gona fix. This should be delt with in sex ed classes and parents discussing things with their kids, not putting a filter on it which anyone with basic internet knowledge (pretty much any kid) can get around.

Also if this is anything similar to the filter they've put on mobile internet, then im actually worried about kids who want to search stuff to learn about their sexuality if they're confused or worried, or god forbid do biology homework because in my experience these filters block anything that sounds remotely sexual

Seriously?! If i want to watch my porn let me. I'm not going to be told by some posh nob head at number 10 that I can't watch porn without inconveniently turning on a filter by logging in!

What about rented accommodation? Huh? Didn't think about that did you ya idiots!!!!! I can imagine the calls to the landline now.

EDUCATE THE PARENTS TO BLOCK THIS STUFF AT THE SOFTWARE LEVEL.

What next, Wikipedia articles being blocked because it contains boobs?! Oh will somebody think of the children!

Anybody taking bets on what's next?

Yes this upsets me.

The larger problem here is the slippery slope this causes, eventually it will be used as plain and simple censorship.

The slippery slope is a bit of a fallacy. Countries are all ready blocking sites used for copyright distribution.

So the big question... what's considered as porn that's going to be filtered?

Hardcore known porn sites, or someone showing a bit of skin on Facebook...

You want parents... to... actually do parenting? And take responsibility for what their children do? What is this madness?  /s

I'm fed-up of parents shunning their responsibilities. If someone has a child, it's their job to look after and protect it. Not the education system. Not the government. Not the rest of the population. The parents.

Quite frankly, I blame most problems in society today on the lack of parental responsibility. Nearly everything can be traced back to it one way or another.

There doing it all wrong.

This is how it should be done

Opt-In - For exisiting customers

Opt-Out - For new customers

Getting existing familes/couples to opt in, without having under 16s in the house is stupid, against privacy act (surely, as they know who wants it then)

I personally don't trust the filters, there bound to filter out incorrect sites etc.

I'll be opting out, straight away.  I'll go to great lengths to seek a source of quality clunge

The decision to use porn filters should not be made for you. Instead, when you sign up for an ISP you should be required to select your preference. While I can understand the desire to protect children from unwittingly accessing porn I feel it creates a dangerous precedent to start filtering it by default. I mean, why stop there? Children are subjected to violent imagery online, so perhaps access to trailers for video games and movies should also be restricted by default. Gambling can be addictive, so maybe people should have to opt-in to access it.

Further, as has already touched upon, the depiction of women in tabloids like the Daily Mail is just as damaging as porn itself, as is the banality of what is considered "news". I'd rather allow porn and block the Daily Mail to be perfectly honest.

Clearly not being done to protect Children, the Government is progressively getting control of the internet. They have already tested the water with the Pirate bay, blocking a massive site due to violations of the law. Now they are stepping it up to block/restrict access to websites in the 'public's interest'. Who knows how far they will go.

^ Don't blame all parents for the actions of crusading newspapers and brainless politicians.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't mean all parents. It may not even be a majority. I've read comments from several parents on Neowin before that prove it isn't all parents.

Things will just be "silently" slipped onto the porn filter list without most people even knowing it.
