ISPs to include porn filters as default in the UK by 2014

Recommended Posts

I daresay it will be either controllable from the customer's management page... so no calls.

OR - ISPs will allow it to be add/removed X times a year.

Seriously, my worry is all these people panicking as their porn is shut off! I think it's the best thing to happen to the Internet in a long time! If you're an adult and you want to still view porn, then opt out. If you don't want to be subjected to it, or your kids... then you are protected. ALWAYS ways around things for those who really want to view it, but this is for the MAJORITY of situations.

The problem is that this is a slippery slope. You can start off blocking things which are reasonable, but once the infrastructure is in place why not include this website the government doesn't agree with.

We've seen this behaviour before when youtube and twitter have been blocked in other countries due to a single offensive video or tweet.

Anyway children are already trained in avoiding content filters. Its one of the main things that they teach themselves at school

That's what I afraid of too. I don't trust any government to do the right thing.

...and will not require any new legislation as the involvement of ISPs is voluntary.

http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/claire-perry-mp-outlines-automatic-porn-filters-for-uk-by-end-of-the-year-8662106.html

So basically, all of this is speculation, there is no new law requiring ISPs to block porn sites by default, she just assumes they're all going to comply with her plans.

Unfortunately, society has changed a lot over the last 10 years. It is actually becoming a case where children are becoming addicted to porn etc.

Hence why it is coming into effect.

I had an addition to online porn (and I am 34) - almost destroyed my life, so I welcome it. The seed was planted when I was a kid and when I got online in 1996, it meant I had easy access to the stuff and it spiralled. I've been 'porn free' for over 3 years now, and see things for what it is.

I am telling you, it is creating a society where kids see women/men etc as objects and nothing is off limits.

It didn't create that environment, you did. There are groups and such for people who can't keep a hold on rl. We shouldn't censor the internet because a small subset of people aren't able to handle the responsibility.

But then those people who 'have a grip on real life' as you put it, are crying when they will have to "opt out" of the filtering.

What it is, is that these people who 'have a grip on real life' are crapping themselves as when they get a girlfriend, or have a wife accidently goes onto an adult site, it will let them rather than block it - so they know their partner has opted out :)

As said, it is great concept from 95% of the population - the other 5% can just opt out, for free and enjoy what they watch/view :)

We already do it with the mobile side of it - where you DO have to call up, pay ?1 to have adult content unlocked - so it isn't out of the ordinary.

Opting out is fine. Having to do that every day? Not so much!

My wife and I enjoy watching porn together. :p

I don't recall having to pay to get it unlocked on my mobile...

Do you honestly believe only 5% of the population views porn?

Ha.

And the people with a grip, aren't the ones who let their lives be ruined by a simple image. It's not just in regards to porn, it's everything.  Some people who are able to deal with reality, won't mind having it blocked, but as shown in this topic, there are other arguments than "I want my porn" for not blocking it, or opting out, such as freedom of speech, or precedent setting.

If we allow people to censor the internet, regardless of whether it's porn or kitten pictures, we allow them to censor our lives, and take control of the information we're fed or allowed to feed ourselves. That leads to Skynet in the long run.

If ###### are going to be censored why can I still see photos of Cameron on my screen?

On my PAYG mobile account, porn is blocked by default. You need to use a credit card (not debit, as under 18s can have one), and enter the details into a page that's presented should you try to access porn. No credit card? Embarrass yourself by visiting one of their shops and presenting ID.

As for this ISP blocking, If it's a network based filtering system that you can control in your ISP account online, then great. When a new user signs up, or if it's implemented to existing users as a default option, then send an email, or snail mail telling customers about the change and what to do.

Personally, I don't have a girlfriend so... um... I will be changing those settings straight away, should they appear!

Where did it say you had to opt out every day? I missed that - I work for an ISP and the talk was, it would be account driven - you log into your billing area and opt out there - then wait for it to be provisioned and whammo - all is good.

As I said, I have no problem with it - people can opt out - if it was a case of it was blocking for the sake of blocking, then yes I agree censorship is wrong - but to have an opt-out system is a great solution and much better than an opt in system.

Maybe I phrased it wrong. 5% of the population are in uproar that they will have to OPT OUT of blocking it - rest of the population won't care :)

Yep - my wife and I used to watch it together too. And she was 'ok' with porn. It wasn't until it was controlling pretty much all thought and time that it became impossible to control - like a drug. I would download thousands of photos. You'd see things and think it was what women liked - they don't. They tell you they do to make you happy...

I even wrote a book on it (unpublished as it was a book for my self help) and if you read it, you would see how sex influences EVERYTHING - and it creates a society where the most extreme becomes 'normal'.

Don't get me wrong, I am not religious or a nut job - but I am also not fooled by people who say they are "in control" but as soon as it is being regulated, they object to it.

I don't think I should have to "opt out" of censorship, I think you should have to "opt in" to be part of the filter. Why should I have to inconvenience myself to exercise my right to free speech, and to travel (including virtually) where I please?

To think there's a list of people who either want to watch porn, or want to opt out of censorship makes me a bit wary, especially considering the current state of personal security and surveillance by governments.   I think they're just testing the waters to see how much opposition they're going to get, and then move on to other subjects they consider "inappropriate", like anyone who thinks differently than them.

EDIT: I now see your 5% point, and I think only 5% will really speak up about it, because everyone else is accustomed to being babied by the government and told what is right and wrong based on some crackpot with no sense of the real world.  (No, David Cameron does NOT have a sense of the real world, he is a tool)

I guess we'll agree to disagree - we are never going to see sense and i've whacked in my 2p worth :)

I concur. Good debate sir.

It's in the source article.

Features such as time-limited deactivation of filtering and email updates when filter settings are changed are expected to become widespread. "We will have automatic put on, so if you turn the filter off at 9pm, it turns on again at 7am," said Perry.

As I said, I have no problem with it - people can opt out - if it was a case of it was blocking for the sake of blocking, then yes I agree censorship is wrong - but to have an opt-out system is a great solution and much better than an opt in system.

I think there are pro's and con's to each system. Many people will complain about having to opt out, but far more wouldn't bother to opt in. For me, I don't mind either, but I suspect opt in would end up keeping it away from more kids.

Everyone's different. We watch it occasionally, for fun. It doesn't control our lives or cause any problems, it's just harmless fun.

Until 7am the next day? that's a lot of calls to the ISP?

I can just imagine the day it is enforced, how many people will flood the phonelines with calls from guys demanding access lol

I love it when these sorts of things come along. It actually makes it easier for people to avoid detection.

a) Anyone with even pretty low level knowledge can circumvent easily

b) When plod arrives you can easily say "but that's blocked guvnor. wasn't me!" and then when checks are done it'll show you couldn't have accessed the sites in question

It's self defeating.

The larger problem here is the slippery slope this causes, eventually it will be used as plain and simple censorship.

Ironically the Daily Mail pushed so strongly in their campaign for a filter, go on their site? Look at the sidebar, most of the articles feature scantily-clad women in bikinis or their underwear. I hope if this filter gets implemented, the Daily Mail gets blocked.

What is this going to do to sites like the Sun, and they have no excuse since their "page 3" feature is sold in stores to people of any age on a daily basis :P
