+Byt Subscriber¹ Posted June 17, 2013 Subscriber¹ Share Posted June 17, 2013 Hey All, I have been looking into getting an encrypted external hard drive and have been looking at this one - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Satechi-LockDown-Super-Speed-Encrypted-Enclosure/dp/B005KDZ8EA/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top I just wondered if anyone has tried these before and do they have performance issues due to the encryption? Thanks :)

Dick Montage
My old boss had a drive then, when you connected via USB, the computer wouldn't even see it until you typed in a PIN on the keypad on the drive itself. Entering this PIN served 2 purposes - firstly it allowed the device to be seen, but secondly it authenticated the internal encryption to read/write to the drive. REM2000
the best product i have found for encrypting drives, both internal and external is trucrypt. free/open source and even the fbi can't crack it. The great thing is that it's cross-platform (WindowsXP/7/8, MacOSX and Linux) and is really lightweight, taking up hardly any resources, i use it a lot and can't speak highly enough of it.
