Rumour: Xbox One family sharing was a "45min demo"

Recommended Posts

and people actually thought they would let you have full access to 10 family members games?

I knew there would be some catch to this, it just didn't sound right after what they were trying to implement with DRM policies.

I can't even imagine what a ****storm that would have been if they didn't tell people about this before the release.

Just like you can share any disc though.

There was some uncertainties about the limitations and one of them being wether the original owner could play at the same time as a family member, which many believed you could, personally I thought that to be unlikely. this might be where the demo thing comes in though. you're only allowed to play for 60 minutes when the original owner still plays. Then there was the issue of how many could access the library at the same time. it was rumored it as only one or two at a time (except for th owner).

so if the limit was one player per game at any time, and max 1 or 2 people accessing your shared library. then it doesn't seem unrealistic. remember it's replacing disc and was supposed to give you the same and extended freedoms of discs. And this was meant for family, they where working on an actual loaning out feature to come at a later update.

Still worth it to get rid of the disadvantages of discs while still getting the advantages of it.

Don't like discs? Buy digitally.

Lol at the calling people delusional, when in truth you had no idea about this restriction either.

People thought MS was going to be super generous and essentially hand us a system where everyone could get together and share a massive library of games on demand. That was delusional.

Rumor. I don't believe it. Somone writing on pastebin or whatever is not a good source. I could've written it, pretending to be a MS employee. The last one looked like it was written by an angry 14 year old..

Why would we want to download 40gb if we could install from disc in 15 mins or whatever?  It's a difference between playing with disc and installing from disc.

That makes sense.

Although it totally makes family sharing less of that "killer feature" it definitely would of brought more sales. You could play the game, get game progress saved and play it a couple of times. In all fairness, that's quite a-lot of play through. We still loose the digital game library and everything around that, which is still a big loss.

this whole rumor was from a freakin pastebin supposedly from a ms employee on the xbox team

you know what else I found on pastebin? make a thread about that

http://pastebin.com/Nre9WEht

I know its on pastebin, but there's certain specifics in there and the nature of the text which gives it some credibility. You explained the point yourself when you created that other pastebin.

I bet if it was a positive rumor you would beleive it without a second thought. No matter who the source was.

And you think everything on pastebin is true right? No, you're smarter than that./

With every rumour you've got to look at it and think whether it has any credibility. To be honest with how this is wrote and the specifics mentioned, it holds substance. It reveals something about family sharing which sounds utterly believable. Then again, could of been easily faked.

What a load of twaddle,

The Sony fanboyism on this forum is pushing me further and further away from the PS4 because i know it'll be those same twats i'll have to put up with on PSN.

Yes I am a PS4 fanboy with glasses tinted with Sony. Hehahaha. Face my evil smile! Btw I met people on Xbox live they are all angels and play from heaven.

/s

Don't you think it's idiotic to call someone fanboy of an unreleased product?

I am not saying you are this/that fanboy but at least show some presence of mind.

 Someone said #dealwithit

It's true. It's a victory for common people. I may actually have a chance of buying an XBox One. I also welcome the ability to order games from Amazon UK and US.

DRM apologists will have to wait out this console generation.

I suspected there was a catch of some sort (although this is just a rumour). Microsoft weren't exactly screaming "you can save money by sharing your games with friends and family anywhere in the world, which is so awesome that we know you won't mind the 24h check". On the contrary, they were rather subdued, information on it seemed hard to get and straight answers even harder.

Some people were reading into it far too much.

Honestly, did anyone think that 1 user could give full access of his library to 10 other users? Allowing them to complete his games without having purchased them? If the used gaming market was hurting the developers then this feature would kill them.

Imagine, 1 person shares his gaming library with 10, Those 10 people share theirs with 100, those 100 with a 1000, those 1000 with 10,000, those 10,000 with 100,000, those 100,000 with 1 million.... It would be WORSE than piracy, because piracy requires a know-how and is a tad bit difficult to get into, you have to find the game, download it, crack it etc... But this "unlimited family sharing" would make it so incredibly simple to screw the developers.

Did anyone really believe the above was what Microsoft were going to allow. Not to the mention the developers?

Here is what doesn't make sense to me.  All Microsoft has to do is push the Digital Downloads and they and the publishers win.

The stuff he said makes no sense about publishers losing money.

1) Offer the digital download of a game same day as the disk copy (which they are already doing)

2) Lower the price significantly on day #1 for Digital Downloads (At least by $20-25) because they get to keep more cash

3) Offer the ability to switch instantly to all of your Digital Download games (without putting any disk in the machine)

4) Offer the ability to play your games on any Xbox One console anywhere around the world

5) Receive the game quickly using bit-torrent (quick satisfaction)

With these reasons, anyone with an Internet connection can just download the game and most would if it offered a cheaper alternative than disks.  People love to save money and to be offered advantages.  This is why Steam works.

So, what he said is non-sense, because publishers can sell their title online and give people a price break because there isn't a middle man to sell publisher's games.  Thus GameSpot and used games will eventually go away.  This is 2013 and the Internet is everywhere and it should not be hard to download games these days.

Also why would anyone be proud of a useless feature that they can just download a free demo for the same game on Xbox Live anyway.  That would be incredibly stupid.

I can't trust these rumors.  They are trying to look legit, but the common sense is lacking.

Credit where credit is due though, it's actually a great idea. Not only does pretty much every game have a demo, but your progress is also saved, further enticing you to make that purchase. Genius.

No wonder he's gutted.

The PSN currently allows this. You can play a friends game for 60 minutes, after which you are sent to the PSN store to purchase the game.

Yup full game trials have been on + for ages http://faq.en.playstation.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5013/~/full-game-trial

Completely useless to me though, I'm not downloading 10GB to then buy an overpriced digital version.

You can't share someone else's game. That would be pure stupid and bring up the use case which you mentioned.

We're probably never going to find out what family sharing would of become.

So it allows playing demos when almost every game on Xbox already comes with a free demo? That doesn't make sense.

This is the first time I am hearing about sharing on PSN without sharing account. Why didn't anyone mention this before?

No it's not the same as a demo. A demo is typically a segment of a game (can be from anywhere, start, middle, end) that you are restricted to play, everyone can only play the same amount of content. The demo doesn't even have to be from the final build of the game.

This is a full game download of a gone gold/retail title that you get a 45min-1hour timer on, so if you're good at games you could get further into the game than someone who sucks. Your achievements/save games are kept, and to keep playing you can buy the game after your time limit is up.

This is why I very much doubt this rumor. With a time limit of how long you play the game, why the hell do you need to check in every 24hours? You don't. Which in turn, simply means this rumor is false.

This sounds like a clear belittle of the family sharing program before it even came to light, because we probably never will see it.

We were toying around with a limit on the number of times members could access the shared game (as to discourage gamers from simply beating the game by doing multiple playthroughs). but we had not settled on an appropriate way of handling it.

If you were going to be able bound to a limit of the number of times you could reset the timer, that has to be phoned home to HQ does it not?

No, I'm not talking about sharing someone else games. I'm talking about 10 people sharing their respective games with 100 people, those 100 people then sharing their respective games with others 1000 etc.

I'm sure people would have tried to find ways to exploit the timer etc... the checkin may have been necessary to prevent that.

I'ts been a part of the PS+ for a very long time now. 2 years. But no one mentioned it because Microsoft's family sharing, which we now discovered is the same as the PSN's version, was tauted as something else. Being able to share your full games with 10 people.

Well it wouldn't be exactly the same, on the Xbox One it seems every game would've been able to be shared, where as on PS+ it's full game trials of what Sony chooses to offer to you. Mechanics seem to have worked the same though (some sort of time limit, trophies/acheivements and save game files can carry over to full game unlock).
