Outlook or Gmail?

Recommended Posts

Looking to switch my primary email service, I want to leave Yahoo. They don't seem to be going in the right direction with email or anything for that matter.  I don't really like the privacy issues (scanning email) with Gmail. Which would you recommend?

outlook does the same thing, they are not really reading it more than they are looking for keywords so they can sell advertisements.

Given Gmail dropped Exchange support recently, would have to say Outlook.

I use GMAIL since it integrates better with my Android phone.  If I ever go WP, I may switch over to Outlook.  I have an outlook account I reserved, but never really used it.  Yahoo is my spam/site signup address and has been for along time.

I've used Gmail for the past few years as I prefer the labels approach vs the folders approach to sorting. That said I haven't used outlook.com so it could be just as good.

Regarding the whole "privacy" issue of scanning your mail, I wouldn't worry about it too much. The whole thing was overblown, and if you really have concerns, it can be switched off in gmail settings. My recommendation would be to try both and dump the one you like the least.

I use my own domain which is powered by Outlook.com, no problems what so ever. It also plays very nice with the default email client, phone book and calendar on Android.

I prefer outlook as it works so well with Windows 8, mail, skydrive and Windows Phone. Also Gmail doesn't allow exe files even when zipped, you can send those but not receive.

About the scanning, I created a fake email on hushmail from public computer couple of years ago. Then sent an email in there from my hotmail saying something like "continue with the attack on the white house. Allah akbah" but got nothing, not even a single drone strike xD. I might be on some list though if I ever wan't to spend holidays in US.

My vote is for Gmail.

I have used it for the last 8 years and had never had any problems with that.

And I've used it with iOS and Android and it's OK wit them.

I think I will be going with Gmail, it seems to be the best at keeping out spam and has a nice, customizable interface.  Now as for migrating from Yahoo to Gmail, that's another story.  Yahoo won't allow you to use POP3 to mail forward unless you have Yahoo Plus, which I'm certainly not paying.  Any free email migration solutions?

I use Outlook.com these days. Performance is very good on virtual environments.

Try them both. It's only your own opinion that matters. I like minimalism, for that, I chose Outlook.

It's Outlook.com over here, I like the way it's going. Finaly an email service that does have a vision for the future.

Does Yahoo let you connect to view through POP3 (i.e. from Mail app or <insert email client here>), or would you have pay for that too? Gmail has a feature that will make itself appear as a POP3 email client, download the messages and send them to your inbox.

Alternatively you might be able to set up a rule in Yahoo mail which will forward any email received there to an alternate address. If that facility is available, just use gmail as the forwarding address.
