HTC CEO refuses to quit as executive pay is slashed in half

When HTC posted its worst-ever earnings last quarter as profit plummeted a shocking 98%, all eyes turned to chief executive Peter Chou. ?If HTC fails one more time, then they?ll be under pressure to replace the CEO,? one industry watcher said. As the company?s struggles continue, The Wall Street Journal spoke to CEO Peter Chou about his future with the company, and he insisted he is still the right man for the job. ?I know you guys want to ask, will I quit,? Chou said. ?There are a lot of rumors that say I would quit, but I never said that. I?m not going to find another job.? Separately, the Journal did some digging through HTC?s newly filed annual report and found that pay for the company?s top executives has been slashed in half.

Maybe stop confusing consumers by releasing a new phone every week, I thought they'd stored that with the original One series, then they started releasing new phone again so shortly after.

The only blunder I see, is releasing the "HTC One" after the "One X" and "One X+"...etc. 

 

causing confusion, as you'd think the On X, x+ v, etc would all come after the "One"

 

other than that...HTC Phones are great!  Love the styling of the One/One X over samsungs designed-by-lawyers phone.

HTC needs to dump android asap and move to the future with windows phone exclusively and make one of those Nokia deals with ms. I mean lets face it,Samsung has the android crown and no one is taking it from them. At least if they switch to the up and coming windows phone,they can cement their reputation as an original windows phone device maker that will pay dividends when it starts having a large share of the market. Peter Chou needs to do the right thing for HTC.

Oh please. That is just as bad as saying Nokia needs to go android. HTC problem was lack of support and the many devices they released. Why Samsung came out in top. They didn't have as many devices and better support. HTC dug themselves in a whole. And not Samsung is starting to see some of what happened to HTC (tons of devices, support issues) with the S4 not selling as well and offers little from the S3 than gimmicks. Not saying Samsung had great support, but it was much better than HTC.  Samsung continues as they are, they will end up like HTC. Faith in HTC is lost and if they can get it back, I can see them doing well again.

 

And if WP was so great and accepted by the masses, Nokia would be doing better, and Samsung/HTC..which both make WP devices, would focus more on the platform.  WP has a lot if potential, but as it is now it is not very well accepted.

If you want to know HTC's problem, ask any old HTC customer....like me. I'd never buy another HTC phone under any circumstances. Worst phone ever.

please re read what im saying. im not saying android specifically is their problem. what im suggesting is, since windows phone is so small currently, they can push the reset button,and build up their brand and reputation on a totally new up and coming platform. then when windows phone is a market leader or has more significant share, an obvious choice for one of these phones would be either a Nokia device, or HTC. the others manufacturers would look like bandwagon jumpers,and they wouldn't have the experience with the OS,and reputation either. they could be a premier manufacturer of said devices.

 

I don't think giving better support for their phones and making less devices is going to magically shift the tides and undo everything that's happened. they put out their best effort in the htc one,which they got a lot of praise for from the tech community and bloggers. If this fails to move the markers, then there is no hope. Id like to know what do you suggest they do then?

Didnt say it would magically fix their problems. But less devices, and better support would go a long way to improve things for HTC. Lack of support is the number one complaint on the Android platform. If they come out and start releasing updates fast, then it will help them a lot. And less devices means less phones to support/update and would make things easier. This is common sense and Samsung used to be like this but now, they release a new device every day it seems. what do you mean not working well for nokia? nokias problem is, the other platforms they were using have completely collapsed quicker than anticipated,but this has nothing to do with windows phone. their windows phone unit is showing great growth,and this growth is accelerating. hell, with the release of the 520,and 720, recent statistics show that they have sold millions of these devices in a month or two alone. I wouldn't be surprised if the next quarter they outsell sony,motorola,htc,lg individually with their windows phone sales.

HTC's prices are ridiculously high. They have the htc desire and desire hd many years ago, they were the king of the android smartphones. So they charged a fortune for their phones and still do. They often don't release firmware updates for their low-end phones claiming that the new android versions don't run on 512mb of ram then release a new model with the latest android with 512mb of ram proving that they lied.

 

The HTC Desire C is a pile of garbage, their replacement the desire 200 has 512mb ram, 3.5" screen, 320x480, single core 1ghz, android 4.0: http://www.htc.com/www/smartphones/htc-desire-200/#specs yet their competitors like sony, huawei, zte and samsung are all giving their low end 4" 480x800 screens with dual core 1-1.2ghz, 1gb ram and android 4.1/4.2.

 

HTC seems to think that their brand name allows them to give users poor specs and high prices. ZTE and Huewei will conquer the low end with sony and samsung charging a little more.

 

They also paid a crazy amount of cash for "Beats", that was a massive mistake, i suspect HTC could go bankrupt within a few years. I would sign a deal with ms to make windows phone 8 devices asap.

There are lots of reports out there that are saying things are looking bleak for Nokia and they are not doing so hot. WP is not doing so well so no other company is going to put all their cards on WP. Samsung wont, HTC wont, and neither will anyone else. Like I said before, WP has the potential to do great things, but so far...eh.
