And just who is this guy? Always nice seeing a no name blogger make a claim with no hard evidence.

I agree, nothing that he said is unreasonable or unlikely.  At this point it's clear that there's a privacy risk involved using services offered by US-based companies or companies that base infrastructure in the US.

In case some of the American members are offended by what I said here are some articles that explain further:

It might sound reasonable, but reasonable != valid, especially coming from someone no one has ever heard of before.

I don't see what that has to do with anything, his arguments are sound.

Edit: not talking about the cookie thing, since that was a 3rd party and the post clarifies it, I'm talking about the laws which state they can be compelled to record all search data.

From the about page:

Alexander Hanff is a globally respected privacy expert and advocate with a background in computer science, pyschology, sociology and law.

respected according to whom?

it continues:

Alexander has given hundreds of press and media interviews on privacy issues, many of which can be found on the press page and is regularly quoted in mainstream news.

Except when you get the the press page:

Alexander Hanff has given hundreds of press and media interviews over the years and this page will eventually list many of them, but this is going to take some time due to there being so many of them. We hope to start adding press articles to this page in the coming days.

Why aren't any at all posted? I am seeing zero. If you have "hundreds" wouldn't you provide at least the most viewed, popular or mainstream ones?

Seems suss.

Well, they shouldn't be based in the USA, this is fully true.  They shouldn't use cookies either or use any software they don't own that involved their search engine.

Are there proxy search engines, so you go to one site, enter in what you want to search for and the site will request it.

People want to use DDG to avoid using google. . .

How's that working out for them?

I've been using startpage.com for a while now and it seems pretty reasonable. Regular searches are forwarded to Google with all your information scrubbed. Image searching isn't as good but still okay.

Interesting thanks for that.

Perfectly, for me!!

But does it offer anything over Google? It isn't any more "private" in the worst case.

Even for Startpage and ixquick are new informations there. It seems that they block unknown useragends.

You may be using a privacy-oriented browser extension that conflicts with Startpage. Please disable this extension and try your search again. If this does not help, please contact us at (212) 447-1100 (USA) or autoquery @ ixquick.com.
