Paula Deen fans vent their outrage at Food Network

Because they're not the ones that gave it that negative power (connotation). Whites are the ones that gave it that negative power. When it comes from the source of the negative power, it is different, and it's easily mistaken or interpreted in a negative way. Because it is used in a negative way still, by the source of the negative power of the word.

So you still think Black people should be given special treatment and be allowed to keep using the word? That's treating Blacks differently, because they're black. That's Racism pure and simple.

the reason the word still has "power" in people's eyes is because they let it...  it's like teasing someone, or saying 'nayh nayh, i have xyz and you don't!', as soon as the person says that they don't care that you have xyz and they don't want it, it loses it's power...

if people would stop careing about the N-word, it would lose it's power....

Some do describe racism as any observation of the differences between the races. People who don't understand affirmative action, or Stephen Colbert for instance, when he's trying to highlight the absurdity of that logic.

I think that any intelligent person knows that racism (in the true meaning of the word as used in the everyday vernacular) is usually defined as:

Racism is usually defined as views, practices and actions reflecting the belief that humanity is divided into distinct biological groups called races and that members of a certain race share certain attributes which make that group as a whole less desirable, more desirable, inferior, or superior.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racism

Special treatment for using a word? Is this high school? Is it something that you really want to, or have to say? Does it somehow make the white race less desirable or inferior for not being able to use that word without offending someone, and the black race more desirable or superior because they can without offense to themselves?

This, however, has nothing to do with the racial attributes, similarities, or differences of the black or white races. You could interchange blacks with any race, and whites with any race, and it wouldn't change the context of this argument. This is a sociological phenomena, and would be true of any race of people that were forced into slavery for hundreds of years by one race, believed to be less than human (3/5ths) by that race, treated less than human by that race, and had certain demeaning words used to denote their difference as a non-human or less than human by that race.

You walk around using the "N" word and not being a racist... I'll be content to not use the word and have people like you think that I'm a racist :)

Ahh yes, the real racists are black people because you can't use racist slurs to identify them.

First I want to say that I don't defend racism at all and my wife watches the show but I don't.

The N word should never be used at all and is unacceptable.

Second,  This is all about social networks and why I don't like the social networks on the Internet.

The fact that anyone's life can be ruined over something someone said years and years ago and leaked it to the Internet and knowing that you can get fired over that is just as unacceptable.

Social networks have too much power and that power can be used as propaganda to sink entire companies.

I think that is very scary and that is too powerful.

Way to fail reading comprehension, I said if anyone thinks black people should be treated differently, because they're black, they're racist.

Did I say "Blacks are racist because I can't use racist words!" I'm seriously struggling to even comprehend how you even came to this summary of my post.

At least people wont be making fattening recipes now from watching her!

Yeah -- like there's a shortage of fattening recipes, cooking shows, and advertisements on TV.

I'm so upset, I can hardly eat my Paula Deen chocolate cake !

Lol! It is so funny, today I was searching for a recipe for strawberry cupcakes to make my girlfriend. I pulled up one clip of her show and at one point she said, "Don't have a heart attack, but we're adding 7 cups of powdered sugar". Yeahhh, all cupcakes are unhealthy but that was for the icing alone and it is quite frightening, lol.

Why all this fuss over one word? Really America get a grip.

It's okay if black or (African American) people call themselves that, so why can't white or should I say Caucasian people say it.?

Hell in the movie Django UnChained that word was mentioned about 40 times.

USA is a crazy country it was founded by Geniuses, but now it's run by Morons!

Being fired over saying an offensive word without knowing anything about the context in which it was used is absurd.

With that being said, the Food Network probably added about 5 years to the lives of millions of people with this move.

Maybe they just should ban that N* word.  I am hanging out with my Black buddies, and they are calling each others like that all the time.  It has become a normal word for me.

It is weird that they don't get offended by that.  However, the world is falling down, when it comes out the mouth of other races.

But in Deen's case the context was known in at least one instance because she provided the context of recounting her encounter with a black robber to her husband.

Lawyer: Have you ever used the N-word yourself?

Deen: Yes, of course.

Lawyer: Okay. In what context?

Deen: Well, it was probably when a black man burst into the bank that I was working at and put a gun to my head.

Lawyer: Okay. And what did you say?

Deen: Well, I don't remember, but the gun was dancing all around my temple ... I didn't -- I didn't feel real favorable towards him.

Lawyer: Okay. Well, did you use the N-word to him as he pointed a gun in your head at your face?

Deen: Absolutely not.

Lawyer: Well, then, when did you use it?

Deen: Probably in telling my husband.

And, it was during a deposition in a lawsuit that claims that her and her brother, Bubba Deen, discriminated against blacks in the workplace, amongst other things, and made racially derogatory statements regularly.

Now, more employees are coming forward with allegations that back up the woman who's suing.

OK, so the use of the 'n' word seems almost commonplace here in the south, I grew up in the northwest and rarely heard the word, but when I moved into Florida, it almost seems a common word that is used in day to day conversation, so with Ms. Dean being from Georgia (which is part of the south) I am almost certain that the word would have come up at least once. Why does the Food Network give a crap about her using the word, did she utter it on her show? Even if she did, do they not edit those Freudian slips out during the post processing of the show?

They probably don't, but since it got out and it's being hammered by the media, they have to feel that they are protecting their image, so they're firing her for that. Personally I think she shouldn't be fired, it's the southern mentality, doesn't make it right, but she doesn't know any better either.

It doesn't matter if it was 20 years ago, or 20 minutes ago. It's unacceptable now, and it's unacceptable then. When people keep racism alive by defending such blatant racists, it'll never go away.

I am not defending her actions or statements, those are despicable. Racism can't be defended, it has no place in society.

I take issue with it coming out 20 years later and being used as a tool. IMO, this action takes the racist comments and puts them front and center as a tool while never touching on them and getting her to see the error of her ways. She apologized and in this apology-demanding world we live in... it sounded like an attempt to reduce the impact to her career. Not an apology for spewing hate.

Why would anyone need to identify anyone? There's no need for it to ever cross anyone's mind.

"Oh you know the guy...don't make me say it...... the guy with dark hair... brown eyes, he's tall..."

"Brian?"

"No, not him, the fat, white guy at work, Dave something."

the inspiration behind her idea to staff her brother Bubba Hiers' wedding with black men pretending to be slaves (turns out it struck her when she had dinner at a restaurant where the waitstaff reminded her of slaves):

"The whole entire waiter staff was middle-aged black men, and they had on beautiful white jackets with a black bow tie.

I mean, it was really impressive. That restaurant represented a certain era in America?after the Civil War, during the Civil War, before the Civil War?It was not only black men, it was black women?I would say they were slaves."

The filer of the lawsuit, Lisa Jackson (the former general manager of a Savannah restaurant owned by Deen and her brother) claimed last year that the chef specifically expressed her desire for bevy of tap dancing "little n***ers" to send her brother off to married life with Southern flair. (Unfortunately, Deen allegedly decided against that plan out of fear the media might somehow twist her cute idea into something racist.)

In her suit, Jackson alleges Deen said, ?Well what I would really like is a bunch of little n***ers to wear long-sleeve white shirts, black shorts and black bow ties, you know in the Shirley Temple days, they used to tap dance around. Now, that would be a true Southern wedding wouldn?t it? But we can?t do that because the media would be on me about that.?

And the two groups that LOVE to leverage that capability of social networking are "community activists" (sounds like a code term for "politicians") and lawyers (especially civil, not criminal law practicing lawyers).

Until everyone is forbidden from saying this word (I'm looking at the Rappers etc). Then we need equal punishment. The notion of "I can say that word, I'm black" is nonsense. "Oh I'm allowed to tell Rape Jokes, I'm a Rapist"

Being black is not criminal, in most neighborhoods, so your analogy is bad. Not saying I agree or disagree, just saying  your analogy if not applicable.

I think it's more about context than "did she ever use the word'.

Yeah, props to her for not lying about it. And I would not have dropped her show for that. Reading the details, extent, and content of the expounded remarks, now public, I probably would have wound her show down too. If nothing else as a business decision.
