Is Microsoft abandoning its mobile operating systems?

In recent weeks Microsoft has been doing some odd things with mobile operating systems, Windows RT, and Windows Phone 8. I think Microsoft is moving towards dropping its mobile OSs in favor of supporting Microsoft applications on other platforms and eventually replacing them with Windows 8.1 on their own devices.

First, some background. Goodness knows Windows 8 has been a market failure, but it's a rip-roaring success compared to Windows RT and Windows Phone 8 (WP8).

WP8 has finally clawed its way up to third place on smartphone operating systems with 3.2-percent of the market. Android owns the smartphone market though with 75-percent of the market and Apple's iOS hanging on to 17.3-percent.

You might think WP8's growth was good news, but its rise has far more to do with Windows and Symbian's fall than its own organic growth. What's even more telling is that developers seem to be abandoning the platform.

Microsoft is going full stream ahead with Windows Phone, sure in recent weeks the talk has all been about Xbox and Windows 8.1 and Windows RT, but Windows Phone is doing about as good as it can with the competition.

Microsoft made some quite basic errors with their mobile operating systems.

Windows 8 RT? Good idea. Badly executed. To almost all consumers: WTF is RT?  RT first of all should not carry the windows 8 badge, and certainly should not carry an arbitrary RT badge. RT means sweet FA. They should have called it something meaningful and communicated that with customers.

In fact they seem to have fired everyone who has the ability to communicate ideas to the public properly. Same happend with Xbox One, had some good ideas, communicated them poorly. Resulting backlash meant a u-turn on it.

Also, I hope they are not abandoning windows phone 8. I have a lot of problems with Win8 (which 8.1 looks like it will fix) but I LOVE win phone 8.  It is awesome and doesn't get the attention it deserves.

Does this graph even make sense to anyone?

Better question... why is Android app development down so dramatically 6 months?

Funny how a new OS is suddenly judged by it's market share (which will be diminishing if the sales do not grow proportionally with the numbers that are already in the market) or their shipments of devices.

I remember Android being a complete joke for its first two years after which it finally started to get some steam. Mostly because it was the only thing available to plunge into the iOS dominated iPhone market with "me-too" products (let's face it, most of the phones back then running Android had largely same specs and only varied in the homescreen, design and to a lesser extent, screen size).

Windows RT and Windows Phone have entered fairly late into the game into a well entrenched market. There are here to stay for at least a while longer and it's just a matter of time before Microsoft calls it quits (unlikely) or they get some good mindshare in the world. All of these posts are FUD or simply cheap shots at a competitors product to justify the use of gadgets from your own favorite company.

*sniff* *sniff* - I think I smell another rotten SJVN article that was too much cow ****, too little facts. First of all, Windows RT doesn't even exist outside of Microsoft's Surface RT tablet...

Windows RT and Windows Phone aren't going anywhere. If they were, we would know by now. C'mon people, think McFly, think!

It doesn't.

Wherever you see it in stores or advertised it is always bundled in with windows 8. It has no unique marketing of its own and that's Microsofts fault.

Back to the original question is MS abandoning its mobile OS..............No of course not if anything they will invariably invest more into the system design and its advertising .This at the same time they extend their range to include in-car operating systems with built in crash protection.

If Microsoft was abandoning its mobile OS, they would be abandoning everything except the Xbox!

You're the most ardent Windows 8/RT supporter here. I'm sure you have to know that there are more devices running Windows RT than just the MS Surface RT...

In case you don't, here is a not exhaustive list.

I'm not certain if he meant that, or was just acknowledging the fact that the Surface RT dominates RT sales.

Yes, that is what I meant.

And why not ???

The Wii U success will be judged by its market share even if it's a new console. Why? cause Nintendo is an old player in the business.

It's not like Microsoft is new at making OS. Before Windows Phone there was Windows Mobile. Before RT there was Ms Tablet PC.

And I was right. Another SJVN pile of dung. I'd really like to know what dumpster this guy goes diving in to come up with this kind of garbage.

Numbers show what you read into them. During WWDC Apple said OSX grew by 15%/yr while Windows grew by 3%/yr. What that means is that for every 2 macs 9 Windows PCs are sold.

They also said that 33% of Android phones run Jelly Bean trying to show fragmentation in Android. What this number means is that there are more JB devices than iOS devices in the market right now..

So.. Numbers can be skewed however you like it. WP has seen significant growth over the past months, much more so than any other mobile OS. If things play out well before you know it the numbers start to show it's 1:1.x against iOS at which point the numbers would seem to be a lot less favourable towards iOS.

The only people who refer to it as "Windows 8 RT" are the ones who don't know better. MS themselves only started adding the Windows 8 name in front of it with Windows 8.1. Before it's only officially be recognized as Windows RT.

I'd hate if they abandoned it. I happen to like their phone's OS much better than the competition. Andriod is a mess and Apple likes to throw their users in the dungeon.
