What do we think of the Xbox One Kinect?

Recommended Posts

What if you drop your Xbox and it breaks? What if you go on a trip and forget your control pad? What if, what if, what if?

well the xbox is necessary to function and the kinect is not so your point is moot, and the control pad is not going to be about $200 + you can buy even cheaper 3th party control pad so your point is moot.

OK let's spell this out one more time... The Kinect is baked in to the XBox One, it's part of the console.

And that's also a option, you can go in and have it not do that if you're that paranoid about things for some reason.

and if you can do that and have it do nothing then what is the point of having it connected???

if you can have it do nothing with the settings then that means that it's not a necessity.

What?

(Oh and by the way, it's "moot" not mute.)

Ok, let's spell this one more time....    it's artificially part of the console because it's not necessary.

Big man with your big words haha :p

If MS says it is part of the XBox then it is part of the XBox. Which bit do you not understand? Just let me know and i'll write it in big words so you can understand it. ;)

MS is trying to learn from their mistakes with the Xbox 360.  They fragmented the market by releasing the system with and without a hard drive.  While it allowed cheapasses to get a 360, it was detrimental to the everyone else.

By having the Kinect as an optional add-on, devs have a much smaller market to cater to as not everyone has a Kinect (ie fragmented market).  Since the Kinect is a huge part of MS' vision, packing it in with the One is a smart move.  Now devs have a defined platform so there is less risk for them.  They know exactly what end users have.

Whether people think that a Kinect is "necessary" really isn't the point.  Don't like it, don't buy a One.

Then they should bundle a screen/TV of sorts with every Xbox One because it's necessary to actually use it or a couch or a generator or a <can't think of any more stupid stuff>.

It's necessary because that's how it was designed. Period.

Yes I can see it in the code " if kinect not connected then xbone worthless else works fine" lol

because anything in software can be taken out easily now unless they are routing power through the kinect I don't see how it's a necessity.

but I see you are blind to any reasoning so go and buy you xbone when it comes out I just hope you don't brake or loose your kinect because you are going to end-up with a $500 of a worthless  xbone or a $700 xbone that is if you don't brake the kinect again when you take it out of the box when you are so excited to have paid another $200 so you can play your xbone again because if you do then it's going to end-up a $900 xbone.

At this point i'm starting to believe you're just hitting the keyboard and hoping it makes sense. It doesn't.

I can't even fathom a decent reply to the above because it's a incoherent mess, however i shall try my best.

Microsoft have bundled the Kinect with every XBox One, this is their choice and they believe in what they are doing. Having it as a required part of the system means the XB1 environment will be less fragmented and better developed for.

The thing is no one is forcing you to purchase an XBox One, if you do not like the idea of the Kinect, then feel free to choose from any of the number of other consoles available, that's your right as a consumer.

Also your line "but I see you are blind to any reasoning so go and buy you xbone when it comes out". Well nice try but i haven't actually decided which console i'm going with. I've made it abundantly clear on this forum that i'm a huge supporter of both consoles and the need for competition to drive the industry forward. However be it MS or Sony, i will stick up for either if the accuser, such as yourself, is just plain trolling.

it's their choice and will pay for it lake they are paying for with win phone and windows 8

just because the kinect is there doesn't mean that developers are going to use it ever heard of sixaxis??

you are right as my consumer right I will not buy the xbone.

you are the perfect customer for microsoft you just take anyway they give it to you.

I'm not trolling they are perfectly acceptable concerns I hope you are not one of those people that waste $500 without giving it a second thought about your investment but then that is you consumer right to not give a damn which is what Microsoft is counting on.

What does this even mean? Both are gathering a user base at an extremely fast rate. So MS put a start button back in, it's hardly the most amazing awesome turn around in the history of technology.

They won't have to but there's far more chance of it being used in a much better way once it has broader adoption, something that it being required will do.

Making assumptions of other members just makes you look like you don't have a leg to stand on. I make informed choices and go with what ever fits my needs the best. If that is MS then that's what i get, if it's another company then so be it. Stop trying to turn it around to make me out to be some sort of MS apologist, it won;t work and you just look stupid.

I see a lot of posts about something as simple as 'Is the kinect necessary'

Microsoft has stated it was, they didn't go into great detail why and I'm sure they will further down the track.

-Maybe the main way to turn it on is via voice 'Xbox On'? Maybe it needs facial recognition to log you into your account? detail still unknown so wait for them before you begin arguing over something we don't have the answers to yet.

And Superboy you are trolling, you are anti-xbox and are posting in the Xbox section about kinect.

If you don't like Xbox One or Kinect that is your choice but the original poster does specifically state that you should remain on topic and if you have no interest in the Kinect (Or Xbox in general in your case) than you should refrain from clogging up the discussion.

I do like both just not the forcing you to have it connected becase of the reason i stated before "what if the kinect brakes, will the xbone be useless" and if they change their ways i,ll buy one.

Just so you know I'm not anti microsoft just the new waythey are going about forcing everyting with artificial reasons.

As I said earlier Microsoft hasn't discussed how the Kinect is necessary so we don't know if the kinect breaking would cause the console to be unusable.

They are forcing the kinect on people who want a Xbox One, yes. But the same thing can be said about the TV features, or a newly designed controller, or specific exclusives, or just about anything about the console.

Kinect is a feature which they think will attract customers so they added it, if you don't like it that is your choice.. but that doesn't mean others think the same.

I was very surprised when I saw it and found that it only had the one camera, and then the more i learned about it i found out that the front of it is not solid plastic there are sensors behind the glossy black finish much like what they do with proximity sensors and such on cell phones and laptops. So all the sensors are still there they are just hidden behind so you do not have to see them and the only thing the Camera does is provide video for the applications.

Hopefully it will handle as advertised and not like the original kinect which promised a lot and every time i used one would fall flat on its face.

Two points I would make here are

a). Usually consumers don't like having peripherals forced upon them. I think you're being a  little more kind and understanding of Microsoft, the same kind of understanding I don't think you would be willing to offer a competitor if they were doing something similar.

b). I hope that having the Kinect bundled and always connected doesn't encourage Microsoft to demand devs implement gimmicky motion sensing into their games. We all know that companies love to show off their new tech to consumers and one way to do it is to force users to interact with said tech. Kinect used to be entirely optional: you needed the device and you needed to buy games that depended on the device. Now that it is part of the hardware everyone will have there is nothing separating the two and by extension nothing discouraging devs from implementing that kind of interactivity into a game.

By the same token, I hope Sony doesn't force devs to overuse the touchpad on the DS4 either. Although, having to use a touchpad would be infinitely less annoying than being forced to use Kinect.

Yes. Over promising and under delivering seems to be a bit of a problem in this industry.

I dont know, it seems real easy on forums these days to throw out the fanboy card when you dont agree with someone.  There are plenty of trolls out there, but I dont think having a position like that qualifies as such.  A lot of factors will color your opinion on Kinect just as it does anyone else. Of course there are also those that really just dont take all of this as seriously as some do, so they are more forgiving or open to such things.

Add-ons are always a tough sell though, I agree.  I dont think consumers dislike them as a general rule, its just that they need to offer something they want.  That means devs need to create quality content around them to generate support.

I would hate to see that happen as well, but there are a couple reasons I dont think that will happen:

1.  MS has explained it over and over that the end user will be able to completely disable Kinect within the settings and completely operate the console with a controller, not to mention play any games that dont require Kinect.  As far as I know, there has been no evidence that MS is requiring devs to make any Kinect controls mandatory, so if a dev uses it, its becuase they wanted to do so. For most core titles, I expect any Kinect features to be optional.

2.  MS is treating Kinect for the next gen completely different from Kinect of this gen.  This gen, Kinect is a 2nd platform to MS.  They stated as such when it originally launched.  You saw them devote E3 time to showcase games and various concepts. Of course that wasn't recieved well and on stage demos of motion based games just dont work frankly.  Now, Kinect is simply another feature of the X1 in MS' eyes, not a 2nd platform.  You can see that in how at their first event and at E3, MS didnt showcase a single Kinect only title to demo.  They instead focused on laying out the new Kinect hardware and apis available to devs, while also making sure to point out that Kinect can work great as an optional control in core titles in conjunction with the X1 controller  (The Ryse demo showed how the devs built in optional controls such as raising your shield by flicking up the controller).  Notice the shift in message?  Its no longer about Kinect on its own, its how Kinect can coexist with existing control schemes as an integrated part of the system.

By the same token, I hope Sony doesn't force devs to overuse the touchpad on the DS4 either. Although, having to use a touchpad would be infinitely less annoying than being forced to use Kinect.

I really doubt Sony or MS are going to force devs to force mandatory controls on gamers.  They just need to make it as easy as possible for devs to make use of the options if they wish to.  Sony can garuntee devs that every ps4 owner will have that touchpad just as MS can garuntee every dev that every X1 owner will have Kinect.

Ultimately, MS is taking a risk.  They really want to encourage devs to give the hardware a try.  If devs put out quality content (either Kinect only or hybrid forms), then all of us as gamers can enjoy the fruits of their labor.  The down side is that they have to bundle Kinect as an integrated part, so they require it to be plugged in (even if this isnt a techincal reason) just as Sony bundles a controller with every system for the touchpad support.  Unfortunately, Kinect costs more than a controller, so MS also had to price the system higher.  Sony made it look worse when they unbundled their Move system in order to hit a lower price.

I wonder if MS will change the plugged in requirement or if they already allow that to happen, but just aren't broadcasting it for the sake of dev pr (for cases like a damaged kinect).  Either way, MS wants Kinect to be a feature of the X1, not an Add-on.  We will see if that works.  Sony has sent a clear signal that they are not that interested in their Move system beyond the niche add-on market, so we have two plans unfolding. I doubt MS can afford to drop the price on the console, but if they could, I wonder if they might do a surprise drop before launch to match the PS4. That's hard to believe though.

New Info about the Kinect, It can read QR codes so if you buy the Xbox Live cards you can then put it up to the kinect camera and the credit will automatically be added to your account rather then putting in the 25 character code in manually.

Agreed, hopefully having it as part of the actual system means it will grow, develop and mature over time rather than be a gimmick.
