Xbox One @ BUILD

Recommended Posts

If that was directed at me, I said nothing at Build would change the situation for indies. And it hasn't.

Sure no fees is great....if any of them could actually self publish their work, I'm sure they'd love the benefit of a standard feature they get via PC DD...

Is it really so bad to actually feel good about the change? I mean really, most the positive changes I see mentioned are met with a negative spin.

Also, Build showed us that there is no more technical wall between the X1 and Windows itself. That has huge ramifications for all devs, including indie game devs.  A lot of indie devs like to push to the pc vs any console, so the idea that they can take the game that already works in Windows and port it with relative ease is a big deal.  Now all we need to know is how the Store will work and how the terms differ from the Windows Store.

If the terms are anything like the Windows Store, then that will be a win for devs and consumers.

I didn't say the change were bad or negative? I just said it doesn't solve the biggest issue. You need to have something on the store before you even see the benefit of free patches. The number of indies speaking out against XBLA/choosing other avenues is growing, so it does little to encourage people to release on XBL if they have to jump through the hoops MS asks. Many don't want to be tied to 1 console/platform, give away rights etc etc. Free patches should just be the bloody norm for all of the platforms. It doesn't cut down on "crapware" & it doesn't prevent buggy games/TUs. Fez & State of Decay say hi.

Said it before & will say again, not even going to bother acknowledging any Win8/WinMo/RT/Surface talk.

They didn't say anything but they hinted, strongly, that indies will publish their games just like they do on Windows 8 today.  They also officially said, month or so ago, that they're going to have one central place for Arcade and Indie games on the XB1 and not in different places.  That's just how it is on the Windows Store.   The bit that might need a publisher is for you to have a Xbox Live supported game.  Those aren't indie games anymore, imo.   But just like in Windows now or on Windows Phone, you have lots of games that don't have Xbox Live support that are true indie games.   The same should apply to the XB1, they're just not going to talk about it yet.   They've still got lots of time till November to give us more info and actually show us what the XB1 store will look like and act.

probably...

xbox live branded games + using xbox live infrastructure + using xbox os   = need a publisher

windows/xbox store games using winrt APIs                                                = self publish

I'm not sure why you don't want to mention Win8 lol, its not a bad word. The X1 runs the same core, your going to hear about that relationship a lot, so get use to it.

All I'm doing is wait for them to announce the rest. I don't see a reason to go into a tirade at this point. Once we know how the store will work (ie self publishing option), then I'll be happy or angry.

As others have said, we know MS is capable of being indie dev friendly if you look at their other platforms, so there is a decent chance that extends to the X1. The waiting is the hard part.
