SkyDrive (desktop) on Windows 8.1

Recommended Posts

I have SkyDrive's desktop app installed on my PC but is set on a different location. After upgrading to 8.1 Preview, I noticed the SkyDrive folder on the Navigation Pane of Explorer and it is from a separate location (on my User folder). Also, you should be online to access files from these location so the files are more like links to your SkyDrive files.

Question:
1.) How do you hide this from the navigation pane?
2.) If I select 'Make available offline', will it act the same as the SkyDrive desktop app. This will then make the SkyDrive desktop application useless for 8.1 users when it goes final?

Pretty much. Skydrive is integrated into Windows8.1, so you shouldn't have to install anything.

Files can be downloaded as needed, but if you're looking to save storage space, files you mark offline won't be accessible unless you have a working Internet connection. They're not really "links" in the sense, but partially downloaded files from my understanding of it.

It is indeed standard fare with 8.1 (starting with this Preview), and you can have multiple sets separated by PC name.  While the feature appears cribbed from iCloud, it goes a great deal further than iCloud does by allowing for separation.  (That is a VERY good thing, because I have both the single real PC testbed, and, as usual, I create VMs as testbeds - now, I can keep their settings separated, which I could not before, as neither SkyDrive or Microsoft account settings didn't allow it.)

I think MS said that using a 130GB skydrive folder that only 1.34GB is downloaded to your local PC initially.   It's basically the first chunk of file data, metadata and so on so you have an idea of what file is what until you actually grab the file fully when you double click to open it or mark them for "offline" mode.

I don't think the original line of questioning was answered ... We need to figure out a way to remove the Skydrive entry in the Navigation Pane. It's highly obnoxious that it is forced upon us. Other items in the Navigation Pane have a "Delete" option, Skydrive does not.

MIcrosoft will likely not add a Delete option unless enough people complain loudly enough. While we work on that, it would be great if someone could figure out how to make it vanish, perhaps via registry?

Best.

Skydrive desktop app is working for you? Do you have its icon in the system tray? From what I know, they removed compatibility with Windows 8.1 because of Skydrive being deeply integrated into the OS itself, which sucks because you now there's no way to see sync progress. As for removing Skydrive from navigation pane, if you log in with a local account it disappears automatically.

If your PC isn't connected to the Internet, you can always browse all your files on SkyDrive and rename and delete files. But you can only open and edit files if they're available offline. Making a file available offline saves a synced version of the file on your PC (which you still get to by browsing your SkyDrive).

To manually set whether your files are available offline or online-only, swipe down or right-click one or more files in the SkyDrive app and select Make Offline or Make Online. You can set all files as available offline by opening the Settings Charm within SkyDrive and turning on Access all files offline.

When you are connected to the Internet and open a SkyDrive file that is online-only, SkyDrive will automatically save a synced version of the file on your PC and the status for that file will change to vailable offline.

Why are some of my SkyDrive files dimmed and not available?

Why are some of my SkyDrive files dimmed and not available?

When you are disconnected from the internet, any SkyDrive files that are saved only to your SkyDrive cloud storage will appear dimmed to indicate that these files are not currently available. You can browse, rename and delete these files even while they are dimmed, but you will need to connect to the Internet to open or edit them.

Only files marked vailable offline in the details view can be opened or edited when your PC is offline.

If you want to access SkyDrive files while offline, you can set the files availability in the new SkyDrive app or in the desktop File Explorer. (Right-click one or more files to select them and click Make offline.) You can set all files as available offline by opening the Settings Charm within SkyDrive and turning on Access all files offline.

Does anyone know how to pause syncing on the skydrive desktop app. Its just silly that anything you upload is immediately synced. Why can't we choose to sync it at a more convenient time?

Wasn't the point of a syncing app, to sync your file and keep it updated always? I'm just commenting on the 'silly' comment though I agree that a pause function would be helpful. As of right now, there's none. Exit when sync is not needed perhaps?
