Swear filter ?

So which do we go by?  Post 1 that says no swearing, or post 8508 that says we can if it is in a picture?  Mods, Admins - can we have a definitive answer?  Please.

Personally, I don't care, but I think it needs to be addressed for all to know.

Well this is Neowin after all. There are a lot of inconsistencies with rule applications, and moderation. It depends on the moderator, their mood, and how much they want the rules to be applied.

It is just like the police officer who gets to decide whether to let you go with a warning or a ticket. One never really knows.

And since my warning 6 months ago for something that I still believe did not merit me a warning, I came to the realisation that do your best, and hope for the best. Had I known, perhaps I would have stuck the F word on the photo, and I would not have gotten a warning.

It is true that moderating a forum as big as this one is not an easy task, but I suppose that there must be ways for better consistency when applying forum rules.

If you browse that thread, and those that came before it, I think the answer is pretty obvious.

The thread is marked as NSFW, so most things go, within reason, i.e. no ###### or flange (Y)

Flange? Like the 'FOLD' you see on exhaust parts and car doors?

That's simply not true. Personally I don't have a problem with the odd pic in a NSFW topic with a swear word in it, but some members take advantage and ruin it for everyone else.

We wouldn't allow the thread to become filled with that sort of content, but sometimes it works in context.

Jeez, I'm 40 years old, and I feel like I have to manage a kindergarten sometimes. I've lost count of a few members trying to turn that topic into a "babes" thread as well. Like I say, it's like handling small children sometimes. Thanks god not everyone here is like that :p

Finally, that thread is marked NSFW, so there is content in there that wouldn't impress your employer if you were found browsing in there. That friends, is self moderation. The section(s) are clearly marked.

If I may add my 2?:

I freely admit to being the person who posted the Penny Arcade strip. I'm fully aware of the board rules; yet in this case I didn't see the big deal. The bad words fit into the context of the strip. If I offended some by posting it in the Jokes section, sorry. That being said, some folks (the OP of this thread included) need to relax.

Today, I learned... :)

And to weigh in, I don't think swearing is appropriate. If you can't say what you want to say without swearing, well IMO you need to re-evaluate what you're trying to say (or how you're saying it).

Some exceptions apply, sure.
