2TB drive works on Windows 8/Linux but not on XP

Recommended Posts

I have a 2TB drive with a single NTFS partition on it. I can't manage to read the partition on XP, XP either keeps reading the disk without detecting the partition or says the partition has to be formatted. Win8 (and I presume also Vista/Win7) and Linux can read the same disk without any issue.

Chkdsk says the volume is fine and it was also readable on XP in the past. I have checked the whole disk surface with a disk scanning tool to make sure no sectors are bad (also the disk doesn't make any weird noise) so I doubt it's a disk issue. I also tried with an external box with the same result, XP can't read it.

I think that what made the disk unreadable on XP was running Win8 CHKDSK on it, the CHKDSK scan reported "Correcting Errors in the Uppercase File". That, in combination of having previously copied some files with accented filenames from a network drive. Maybe that CHKDSK changed this 'uppercase file' to adjust for those accented characters thus making it unreadable on XP.

Does anybody have an idea of how can I fix this? I need the disk readable on XP but I don't have the space to copy all the data from it and copy it back. :(

I did already fix the error, and that's what I think was the cause that made the disk unreadable on XP.

No do that one from XP-  So that XP will write it in the file names that it can read... instead of using the updated one that Windows 8 has.

What caused that issue was Windows 8 using it's file naming ...  but I have read in places if open up a admin prompt then run the chkdsk.exe /f  within XP it will re-write thins in the way it need to read it.

If you had read his post...he has used this 2TB disk in the past w/o issue.  2TBs are not a problem on XP.

Time to upgrade buddy

Why?  Because you and I prefer Win7/8 (or any other OS)...he should therefore change his preferred operating system?

Obvious unhelpful trolls are obvious.

Anyway...to the OP...I would be interested in knowing what diskpart shows.  Start > run > cmd > diskpart > list volume ... and see what the file system shows.  This is for Win7 but I believe it is the same for XP.

I really haven't used XP in a while but I did run across this little "how to" which may or may not be helpful (since it appears you have some experience with Linux).

What's what I wanted to try but I'd need a backup disk first and hours for creating a disk image since Windows XP chkdsk can be quite destructive. It will take days :(

Diskpart shows the partition correctly (ID=07, Hidden=No, Active=No, Fs=NTFS). I'll try the ntfs3g tool to see if it finds anything else, if it doesn't find any issue I'll try with the XP chkdsk after I can find a new disk.

2 tb hd is a 4k drive Win Xp Cannot read it right you need to Alignment tool to make it work

It can't be the alignment since it was working before, also the alignment should affect only performance and not the capability of detecting the partition.

No its not about preference or trolling, its mostly about Windows XP being 12 years old and out of support which means it wont work with the latest hardware advancements.

"Dear XYZ company, I don't want to work for you and the other ~40% companies any longer because you're still using XP.

I'd rather live on a street and eat rats for breakfast.

Sincerely,

francescob"

Most likely the disk is formatted as GPT, as opposed to the old standard MBR.  XP can't read GPT so you're have to format/convert it to MBR first.

You can use either disk management or diskpart to determine if it's GPT.

You are being negative ...

It works for me.. and others..  Most people or companies rather not upgrading to new version of Windows from Windows XP... They want to stay on XP as long as they can.  I know Windows XP support either expired or expires soon.. but can't remember excatly date for it.

If they want to stay on XP, that is fine... no need to tell them to upgrade to new version of Windows...

Don't forget that some of us are advanced users or professionals that can manages the 3rd party patches if any are available...  as long as we understand that support is no longer active for XP users..

And last thing, XP users can play games on their XP systems without their internet connection... so they don't have to worry about security risks or viruses.

All fine and dandy, but sooner or even sooner, you'll be forced to upgrade. It didn't take long for this thread to make a turn for the worse, I can't image a future thread in which you are asking for help yet again.

There's no denying that people/companies clinging to XP as their mainstay OS are asking for a world of hurt.

Microsoft can NOT force me. Period.   If they did, I will throw their OS out of the window and then I will either install Linux or get a new iMac.

It doesn't hurt me in any way... because I know what I am doing with these systems I have here.

Simply put...the thread took a turn for the worse because some folks (like you) wanted to spout their opinions instead of helping.

OP...any luck with the linux tip?

Microsoft won't be the one forcing you, it'll be the market as a whole forcing you.

I don't support XP anymore... Online or offline. Simply put, it's going to be random strange support cases like this from here on out, only it'll get worse. It's not worth the time or the money to provide guesses to support an OS people shouldn't be using anymore, the OP even said himself that he's threatening to use other platforms. He should just make the jump, and be done with it. His problem would be solved, and he'd be better off in the long run.

What are you talking about? Microsoft made XP right? then it's Microsoft...

We are talking about XP here... we aren't even talking about market...

I was NOT talking about forever...  they could use XP as long as they can then when it's time to upgrade, they can go ahead to upgrade to whatever they want such as Windows 7 or newer..

Not many people are rich... don't forget that..

A friend of mine came to me with his laptop that didn't work right...  I asked him for Windows CD..  he said he didn't have one.. so I told him I could get him a new copy as long as he pay me... but he said he can't afford to pay $200 for a copy...  I told him I can't fix it without a copy of Windows..     See what I mean... not many people are rich..  that's why some people are still on XP..

So be nice.. it is so lame to tell people to upgrade to new Windows.. unless you pay for the copies for those people? Can you do that? No? I didn't think so..

They can stay XP as long as they want until they have enough cash to get new one or maybe they get it as a gift if they are lucky.

If it was me, if I see family have XP and can't not afford to get new version of Windows... then I will be nice to get them a new copy..  instead of telling them to upgrade and hear them saying "I wish but I can't afford to get one"

Then perhaps you shouldn't have replied. Why go into a support thread where someone is asking for help and say "I'm not going to help you"?

All posts like this ever accomplish is to start arguments and waste everyone's time.

Then why even respond to a thread of which "it's not worth the time"?  You spend a lot of your time trying to convince people they are wrong for using any operating system older than Windows 8 instead of assisting.

The OP's current problem would not be magically solved by upgrading...it isn't a XP limiting factor which is causing the problem.  It is a curious problem which is why I replied and attempted to assist with though I don't use XP.
