Elementary OS Luna @ Work

I've been meaning to give Elementary a try. :p Might download it tonight and throw it on one of my old laptops. How do you like it so far?

Man.. I must say that i am in love with it. Using at work, at the laptop and will install on my upcoming build. To give you an idea on how I liked it, I even started coding in Vala (the language they usually code) and it's pretty awesome.. The only "downside" for me is that is based off ubuntu (I made a promise to myself to never touch that distro again) but they did a really good job and the entire OS fells different (there's even an appstore in beta release to replace software center).

They update it daily, you can get in touch with the developers at G+ (https://plus.google.com/communities/104613975513761463450), share mockups, chat about bugs, check new features, etc.. They work really closer with the end user

How I envy you all. I have a windows 8 laptop with secure-boot. Installing Linux Mint (Never tried it before) was a mess requiring several partitions and using repair-boot from ubuntu, and I almost lost my w8 installation. And for what? Just to discover than Cinnamon is a mess, that it only accepts -without bugs- metacity themes.

Im too lazy and busy to try to make another uefi fiendly distro again :(

hmm turn off the secure boot? i dont think is very useful anyway hehe

an amazing UEFI friendly distro is Fedora. I used to run Fedora 17 with Windows 8 and OSX on my laptop (it was GPT)

If you must have Secure Boot enabled so you can dual-boot with Windows 8, I recommend that you try Fedora. Fedora is well ahead of most other Linux distros in terms of Secure Boot support. Although not all of the Fedora 19 documentation is online yet, there is a Fedora 18 UEFI Secure Boot Guide that I recommend you read before attempting the installation. It should still be relevant for Fedora 19.

If I do make the complete jump to linux. Can I just burn the iso, set my bios to total legacy support and forget about windows and uefi for good?

You can. If I had a UEFI Secure Boot machine now, that is what I would do.

It took me a couple of tries to get Mint set up properly on UEFI for me. I do have secure boot completely disabled I believe. I'm also not dual booting though which is the tricky part. Don't use BIOS emulation mode, just disable secure boot. UEFI is light years more advanced than BIOS.

I did just that. Bye bye Windows, for good. 7 was great, but 8's GUI annoyed me to no end.

Giving elementary luna another try, I must say I'm *really* starting to like it. Its coming together very nicely, and frankly it already seems less buggy than the latest version of ubuntu/unity :p

Nice one thanks!

... Wait, you can use Gnome 3 themes on XFCE?

Most gnome 3 themes come with both gtk2 and gtk3 versions (because there are still many apps that use gtk2, so without a matching gtk2 version you'd have inconsistent looking apps), so those ones can be used in gtk2 desktops like xfce.
