Windows 8.1: Any way to delete Metro "Camera "and "Photos"

Recommended Posts

First of all, the Camera app is so much of a fail app. It doesn't recognize my camera and I've seen others that have "suffered" from that issue. The metro apps just suck. Skype app has the same problem.

So, any way? I've deleted most of the contents in C:\Program Files\WindowsApps. But Camera and Photos aren't there.

Umm, right clicking on them and clicking Uninstall works.

No, they're built in so it's not possible.

heh I didn't even know...thanks :)

You also can't uninstall the Store, Desktop, PC Settings or SkyDrive. While most of those might seem obvious, it's strange that you can't uninstall Camera or Photos were you can uninstall Music, Calculator and Video.

Why are you deleting files out of the Programs folder? Never do that.

First of all, Win8.1 is a preview release, just ignore them, since they do not take up much space anyway. Second, if they're that much of a bother, fall back to Win8 stable.

Just unpin from start and forget about it?

It cannot be unpinned. I'm not talking about the Start Ssreen, but the screen where you see all your apps(when you click on the small arrow down-left)

I found that the cam app stops working with ATI drivers (well it did when I installed 12.6 of the ATI drivers). Not in Win8.1 preview, but in Win8 final. Because, when I uninstalled the ATI drivers, the cam app worked again.

I didnt try the 13.1 ATI drivers. Because I've changed the videocard to an Nvidia one now. But the cam app works fine, with the Nvidia drivers. I think the prob has something to do with OpenCL (I dont think the drivers I installed, installed it, or supported it)

I got an old Labtec model, but Skype desktop and the Camera program are working fine. The problem is the Metro app/. Wtf is Microsoft thinking? That's bad coding.

What exactly is "old labtec model"? May be you should try to fix the problem instead of deleting apps? I checked on mine and it and seems to work fine.

Is your webcam on HCL?

I don't suppose the store has any other camera apps you can install right?  So them not allowing you to uninstall it kinda makes sense this way, because if you're on a tablet at least, then what?

Why would you want to totally uninstall these? This is a preview, most likely they will be releasing updates for many of the built in apps in the coming months. You could have just hindered your ability to use them at all.

I would like to try to reset my "Photos" app. For some reason it stopped working on both of my Windows 8.1 devices, which I found odd. Both have the same issue (https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1161310-photos-app-in-windows-81-broken/#entry595785204)

You cant uninstall these apps because they intertwined with Skydrive. Funny thing is Skydrive really isn't all that ingrained into 8.1. They just want to force people onto their service.

actually 2yos can swim if you throw them into the water. Natural reaction without the element of fear.

Edit: I am not longer able to quote messages via IE11:P

It's our editor. Turn off the lightswitch in the toolbar and it works.

The camera and photos app are not in the program files folder. They are in the Windows folder. These apps can't be deleted because they are integrated with Windows Explorer. They are built into Windows, just like the taskbar. These apps are not Store apps. They are a part of the OS

lol just leave things alone and don't try to butcher the os you'll just end up making everything else worse unpin and forget

type this in powershell to remove all the apps (except the store, filemanger, camera, vpn plugins, media viewer)

Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers | Remove-AppxPackage

then type this to remove the leftovers;

Get-AppXProvisionedPackage -online | Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage ?online

to remove them all use install_wim_tweak.exe (search)

and use the following lines in a batch file;

and no, you will not break windows, and yes the start screen will still work. there will be no apps and no store. if you want to keep the ability of adding apps, remove the lines to uninstall the store.

file manager is not a core component, it's just onedrive under a different name.

I had a similar prob with this Lifecam HD-3000. I found out that the lifecam install from the MS site doesnt work with it. It works with 8 but not 8.1. And if I did install it, the built in mic didnt work. So, I just let Win 8.1 install its own drivers. And both the cam and mic work in camera
