Home NAS box?

Recommended Posts

Im thinking about getting a dedicated NAS server. I usually place my documents, desktop, music, etc on my current setup on another drive so Ill problably go the iSCSI route so it thinks it is a drive connected directly to my system. Other than that, I use my current setup to stream movies and music to other devices in my home (a TV, using WMP's library feature).

I want something "premade"; I perfer not to go thru a FreeNAS type setup as this way it is lesstime consuming.

Other than this, Im not sure what else to ask. If any questions, please ask.

How much storage are you looking for?  How much more stuff do you add year-on-year?

What does your network look like?

Do you need any other capabilities such as DLNA etc?

How many devices will access the NAS?

What's your budget?

2-4 drives and no plans of adding more > Low power ARM device

More than 4 drives and plans to add more in future > Rack Case and RAID card like p800

Yup, I plan going 4 drives max :) nothing else.

BTW, this will mostly like only be used by me and at tops 3 other users.

What Synology model do you guys recommend?

I know you're looking for pre-made, but have a look at the latest Windows Essentials (aka Home Server).

If you're running a Windows based household, there's lot of goodies in there to tie it all together.

Maybe you can have have someone build you a rig?

Synology hands down for a NAS - easy to use, and offers plenty of functionality. If you want 4-bay models, look at the DS413, or DS413J

The DS413 looks nice as it has USB 3.0 and eSATA.

My coworker has that, and it's nice. I have the DS213 - which is a 2 bay unit. I'm very happy with it. Synology also has a live demo of the interface you can try.
