Best GPS for car?

Recommended Posts

I have a TomTom that works pretty OK but updates are so so (also I think the next update you have to pay). Im wondering if there is a better GPS. All I need is GPS; No MP3, no Bluetooth hands free, etc. Just map updates and visible in direct sunlight.

I found iGo to be the best satnav software. You can buy it online and use it with most 3rd party satnavs that support loading software on it...

I got given a binatone a34 or some thing like that, was really cheap but the display is great and the audio is clear. The stock satnav software on it was really poor, a friend suggested iGo. used it and while it was over featured when I first started using it (based on the poor stock satnav) I really started to get used to it quickly.
It wasn't long before i got myself a copy and it came with updates too. Haven't checked the software they sell since the latest version wouldn't work with my satnav quite some time back now, but the maps still get updated...

as for maps, if you want to keep your current satnav and tomtom software, you might be able to find cheaper maps elsewhere for download or use the opensource street mapping project. it was something I was looking into a while back but never tried it with my brothers tom tom (now uses igo on his phone).

Garmin is my choice for navigation, by far the easiest and most intuitive interface - and can be had for very cheap if you shop around for deals.

google maps with a phone is pretty good, but if you don't want the drain or the data usage, the tomtom is hard to beat.

I have had a magellan, I have had tomtom....the magellan is newer and has unlimited maps and traffic updates, it takes much longer to locate the satellites and it takes forever to map your path or update if you miss a turn.   The thing is so slow that even the first gps units are much more effective even if they don't have the map memory.  I use the tomtom even with outdated maps, or I use my iphone...sometimes the combination of both.

As far as outdated maps, how often do things change?  The destinations you travel probably have been there for years unless there is a new development going in place or a store opens or closes.  If you have the address, it doesn't matter if the store is closed or open as long as that address has been there so then you only have to worry about new developments/roads...which change how often in the areas you travel to?  Not that much.

Random plug for Windows Phone!

Nokia's Here+ on my 928 is pretty amazing and you can have it do the full download of the maps so there is no data hit :P

Google maps allows you to download your route to your phone. At least the Android version does.

I just bought one of the new Garmins with capacitive touch screen, and the thing is really really nice.

They have free lifetime map updates now, so you don't need to "hack" them on anymore.

I'ved used  TomTom for a while and it's pretty good.  I live in a pretty rural area and it's handy because it has most of the roads here (not counting dirt roads or private roads), and if you're wondering what's around you can search for a business and get their phone number straight from the GPS.
