Inside the Xbox One controller

Recommended Posts

Just noticed this posted on the front page

Seems somebody has been kind enough to give us a look at the insides of the new controller :woot:

There are some interesting things here (to me at least)

The red stuff to the sides and above the Xbox Button, that is light shining through translucent plastic, like an IR remote, right?

This next image seems to confirm that for me...

As you can see, the two cut outs either side of where the Xbox Button will go, line up with the red in the first picture. Though I can't spot any IR emitters on the PCB

So Kinect 2 must be using IR to track the controllers. This is not earth shattering news, but I don't think it was known.

The three part design of the shell is also interesting. This is the first time that this has been used in any controller, as far as I know. I'm wondering what the decision behind that was.

I suppose it could add some rigidity, but I wouldn't say the 360 pad was lacking in that department.

Actually, it kinda looks like it could make for removable faceplates?

Those seams down the back of the grips, they look purely cosmetic! I can't see the point in having those dirt traps. Or are they replaceable too? Actually, I think they might be, as we have seen in that video, where they show the controller hitting the floor, and part of it "breaking off".

So... Customisable controllers? :woot:

Shame that none of the buttons, or rumble motors were shown, they could have shone a bit more light on things.

Reminds me of the video of the controller being used as a shield within some FPS / Kinect demonstration.

Could have something to do with that but I always thought that it detects the object through normal recognition.
