I decided to try out Windows 8 on my Win7 pc.  Despite the ease of trying it on a VHD partition, no one was clear as to whether I could "finalize" the VHD into a real partition if I decided to stick with Win 8, so I went with the tried-and-true shrink+new partition, and installed Windows 8 on this new partition on the 2nd half of the drive.

Now, if I want to stick with Windows 8, can I still delete the first Win7 partition, and extend the 2nd new one to take over the entire drive, even though the new partition is on the END of the drive?  Or am I going to have to do some tedious disk image cloning that I can't do because I don't have an external scratch disk big enough?

Depends on the tool. If it's not EFI, for example, gParted will have no trouble deleting old partition and then expanding the remaining one. It will still be a rather tedious wait while it moves the data, though.

You could back up both patitions (just to be safe) then format the drive and restore the WIN8 partition back to the drive. Be aware you may have to use a boot manager program to get it to boot to the WIN8 partiton.

Use something like Paragon backup (free) or any other program you like or have.
