Monitor Router Traffic / Find Lag

Recommended Posts

I live in a small quadra plex which now hosts at least 6 different people using the same connection.

I'm sure each person has several things conntected to the wifi as well.

Myself and my roomates have been experiencing really bad and frequent lag for the last couple months.

We are all gamers and this lag is killer. 1000ms ping for 2 or 3 seconds a few times a minute. Play games like league of legends or counter strike, it makes the game unplayable.

Is there a way to monitor the network traffic going through the router to figure out what the cause is?

or at least a way to monitor our own computers to check?

We own an asus N56u which is connected to the modem. We have admin rights and can get access to the router if I have to.

We had QoS setup, but didn't seem to notice a difference.

So far the biggest offender we can identify is youtube.

Ya think??

Wireless is SHARED!!! So your sharing that "300Mbps" which is RAW total bandwidth, so that is not really what is available.. More like 150 if your lucky.. Then your pushing that to the internet, which is what 20, 50 mbps?

And your ALL trying to game?? How much is your internet bandwidth? And your all wireless?

You need to go WIRED and if your all trying to play games to the internet, most likely more than 1 internet connection. You can only suck the elephant through the straw so fast ;)

And how big is your internet pipe?

As stated you can only suck the elephant through the straw so fast

Here is example how latency is effected while your pipe is full

Look at the ping times to googledns when pipe is full

Now check it when not

So yeah if someone is streaming youtube, your pipe is going to full up and your latency in your game is going to suffer. Don't youtube while your playing games ;)

If your trying to track who is doing it while your playing -- depends on your router.. Mine will show me top talkers for example

If your router supports 3rd party, then I do believe tomato or dd-wrt can show you this sort of info as well. So you going to yell to billy stop using youtube? Not sure what the point is, you already know "youtube" that filling the pipe makes your game slow.

Depends on your router - but yes its possible to use QoS, if you had set it up and didn't notice a difference then you did not have it setup correctly or your issue is not related to upload and its very hard to QoS download on a home router.

You can limit the acks going up, so can slow down downloads somewhat - but the comes more into play when your talking about p2p using your full upload pipe and you want your http requests and dns to jump in front of your p2p, etc.

So you can make your game packets have higher priority sure, but its unlikely that your issue is that your upload side is full of acks that you need to jump in front of, etc.

But to be honest, 1 person doing youtube video should not really effect your latency where your seeing 1000ms -- are they streaming HD full length movies or something?

How big of pipe do you have anyway - what is your upload and download speeds when nobody is doing anything off say speedtest.net ?

The default QoS settings on this routers latest firmware seem sick and wrong for gamers...the early firmwares seemed better for it.  It prioritizes web traffic over all else.  You might want to use custom rule mode or something.  But QoS can smooth buffering issues so it's usually recommended.

The traffic monitor on the router page can discern between wired and wireless, at least...I don't think you can do per machine with it anymore.

I would recommend checking the network drivers on the machines and trying cfosspeed, assuming noone is using bittorrent.
