"Apparently" it was cancelled, and they're just doing updates now.

Strictly speaking it wasn't a rollup, but a collection of some updates, as well as new ones. Many weren't superceded though, unlike a true rollup.

Won't happen ever, MS is focused on Win 8/8.1/9 like they should be, an outdated OS won't get much but security updated now if even that after a while

MS is trying to get us to forget about W7...
W8 is their new baby... And they want it to have all the glory...

If W7 gets and SP2 (I welcome it).... No one will really think about 8....
W7 is darn near perfect as it stands now...
W8 is better performance wise, but we all know that there are some who can tolerate the new UI...

I love W8 too (got use to it fairly quickly & still learning new things about it)....

Either or is good for me...

I officially declare XP dead, to me...

My house computers are totally off XP. Now they all have either Windows 7 or Windows 8. Windows XP is a good OS, but its very old and Windows 7 & 8 has so many better features in it!

Why does Win 7 need a SP for it already is perfect for an almost four year old OS.  Really cannot see what MS needs to add to Win 7 other then security updates.

For IT professionals, it's about not having to do 6 hours worth of updates after an install. One update package, and you're close to being ready to roll.

Windows XP services packs 1 and 2 added were some pretty significant updates that improved upon the OS.

There is plenty that MS could add to 7, but it would hurt their bottom line as people would have no need to update to Windows 8.

Or you could use the AIK and deployment tools to deploy an image that includes all hotfixes to date, then you won't be spending any time doing updates after install.

If on a corporate network, WSUS with the GPO setup, then it's not even a thought.

Exactly, that's a perfect solution as well as the updates will install silently with no user intervention.

I was about to say this . if your an IT professional it won't be a problem. They will probably make a cumulative update that has all the security patches rolled into one.  NOt a service pack.

For corporate environment WSUS

But for my smaller clients, when ever I rebuild a machine I use WSUS offline tool. wsusoffline.net

I keep an updated set on a portable USB drive, and run it on machine as soon as Windows is installed. This patches it up pretty quickly, and saves time and bandwidth.

Pretty sure Microsoft are moving away from Service Packs, with new yearly Windows releases.
