Cube World Alpha Released

Recommended Posts

I was surprised that I hadn't seen anything on the forum about Cube World, but the Alpha was released a few days ago. It is an infinite world, voxel based RPG. Currently just for Windows, although a Mac version is planned.

Unfortunately they have been struggling with the demand for the game, so no new user registration is being allowed at the moment (you need to have an account with them to buy the game, similar to Minecraft), but they are expecting that to stabilize over the next few days.

I'm Wollay, the creator of Cube World. I started this game in June 2011 as a hobby project. My inspirations were Minecraft, Zelda, Secret of Mana, Monster Hunter, Diablo, World of Warcraft and many more. My aim was to create an infinite, colorful, procedurally generated world, full of adventures, monsters, and mysteries. The result is Cube World, a voxel-based role-playing game.

My wife joined development in 2012, and we're planning to release analpha version for Windows PC soon. The alpha already has many features, but some are still missing. You can check out a feature overview below.

The alpha will be available for a lower price than the beta version and the final version. We're planning to release updates regularly. Updates are free.

I'd say struggling with demands is an understatement. I can't even get their site to load.

Interesting. I don't have a problem loading the site. I only ever had problems with that when they took it down on release day to fix issues experienced with the load.

Well now it works. But it didn't when I tried the first time.

It's possible that you tried when they took the site down for maintenance. He has been doing that occasionally the last few days.

Yeah. I tried to play it on my Macbook air, which has an Intel graphics card, and it was unplayable. It is still in alpha though, so I hope they will support those in a future update.

So they've put the store live but won't let anyone register?

How am i supposed to buy it then?

I guess i can wait. I've waited this long for it.

I still don't understand why they didn't use humblestore to handle it all. A lot of indies are using that to sell their game. They wouldn't have to worry about any of this then.

Anyone know how I can provide a server for this?

The server exe is in the cube world install folder. here is a guide on how to set it up.

Yeah, I agree. I'm not sure if they thought they just weren't going to get a lot of people buying it in one go. Not sure why they would though. There was a lot of interest before release.

Luckily I had signed up for an account a few days before they released, so once the store was back up I was able to purchase.

Damn it, was so looking forward to getting the alpha for months now. Sure enough, Paypal is the only option and I can't use it of course. Oh well, hopefully down the road he'll add more options for payment (I assume he has to lol).

This launch is a shambles. I still can't create an account to buy the game. You'd think it would be the top of his priorities to get fixed. Think of the money he is losing.

It seems the server is getting DDOS.

I said it once, Humble Bundle would have worked.

Oh well, i'll keep trying. Hopefully he'll sort it out.

Oh man, so many people on their forums having trouble with DirectX9, and all the devs do is post links to the web installer which does bugger all on a Vista/Win7/Win8 system. Would have thought a game dev would understand they need to either package the required DirectX libraries with the game (preferred method as per MS) or link to/bundle the full DirectX9 redist.

I assumed this also. They probably didn't expect the demand and the face they're handling it all, instead of using a third party like humble shop.

Everything seems to have settled down now. Everything seems to be up more often now.

It is a fun game but thank god there is a wiki.
