Apple?s iPhone 5 might be the best-selling smartphone in the world, but a new study suggests it is also the ?most hated.? The Daily Mail points us to a study conducted by U.K.-based social media agency We Are Social that analyzed chatter on Twitter, blogs and forums following the launches of the iPhone 5, Galaxy S4, Lumia 920 and BlackBerry Z10. After tracking the responses and comparing each of the four devices, the firm found that 20% of the posts discussing the iPhone 5 were complaints. This compares to 18% of posts that complained about the BlackBerry Z10 and 15% that griped about Nokia?s Lumia 920. Just 11% of posts covering the Galaxy S4 were complaints, leading We Are Social to conclude that Samsung?s flagship phone is the ?most loved? handset on the market.

Among the top complaints surrounding Apple?s iPhone 5 launch were the phone?s lack of innovation, its switch from the old 30-pin dock connector to the new lightning port, the poor quality of photos captured on some new iPhones, the black and slate model?s tendency to scuff and the handset?s terrible new Maps app.

We Are Social also notes that the iPhone 5 was by far the most talked about smartphone launch. The firm logged 1.7 million social media conversations immediately following the iPhone 5?s debut compared to 300,000 mentions of BlackBerry?s Z10, 140,000 Galaxy S4 mentions and just 45,000 posts discussing the Lumia 920.

I'm not surprised, it's been the worst iPhone I've ever had, and I've owned them all from 3G upwards thanks to my job in telco. The abysmal battery and WiFi performance alone are good reasons to hate it

I've been saying it for sometime now, Apple is going down hill with the iPhone product. IMO iPhone 4 was the last iPhone that was really surprising and new for people, since then it's bad new for Apple. iPhone 4S started pissing people off with making almost no change, then iPhone 5 had a slightly bigger screen but yet again people were expecting something amazing. Some people didnt even want amazing, they just wanted the iPhone 5 to have what other phones already had for sometime.

If Apple wont make big changes with the next iPhone this could really be bad new for them.

maybe i'm reading this wrong but is this only talking about the launch day conversations or conversations since then?

if it's only the launch time period, then it just tells me that more people judge the book by its cover than i thought.  ipad got the same reception when it was first introduced but still manages to be the best sold tablet out there.  if people really disliked the iphone 5, then it really wouldn't have been the best-selling smartphone in the world.  talk is free, people vote with their wallets.

Every day makes me more and more glad I've stuck with Windows phone. LOVE my Lumia 928.   It's a fantastic phone.

I was looking at that the other day and was really disappointed that it was only available on Verizon.  Having to wait for a 920 refresh to come to AT&T.

It's a known fact iPhones always do well in consumer satisfaction polls. This article seems suss...

It isn't a poll of iPhone users.  Its a poll of online trolling.  Apparently Apple haters troll the iPhone more than iPhone fans troll the S4.  I could have told you that w/o the study.

Seems like it's hard to win with people, though. Apple isn't changing enough and it pisses people off. BlackBerry started fresh and did something totally new and people hate that because they were used to the old way. Very delicate balance... and you always hear more from the complainers than the happy people.

Oh not for me. It is by far the best phone I've ever had. I had a personal 3GS before, and I've had 3 different Android at the different companies where I've worked and hated them all. My 3GS with iOS6 wasn't even useable anymore. Now I don't even have the time to completely tap an application on my iPhone 5 and it's already opened.

In fact just because it's not JAVA-based like Android, the iPhone 5 topped the benchmarks for a few months (even quad-cores), just like the iPhone 4S did. It's not the specs of the smartphone components that I look at, it's the number of seconds that pass by on my watch when I do stuff with my smartphone.

Overall, I'm very satisfied by it. Only thing, I'm still wondering why Apple hasn't stuck an NFC chip in there, but then again I don't know where I would use it. It's not spreaded enough.

Sorry you are having issues.  Not sure how an Android phone are going to solve the battery life issues but the WiFi thing seems like maybe bad hardware.  As far as WiFi performance goes, the iPhone 5 has worked better for me than the 4 and the 3GS with quite an amazing range.

I get 2 days of battery life in my normal routine.  When I travel though, the battery life is far worse.  It all comes down to what your signal strength looks like throughout the day more than anything I think.

I'm not surprised, it's cool to bash Apple and even cooler not to bash Samsung so it looks like you are not conforming to the iSheep.

Hilarious.  Yup, trolls are extremely vocal on the Internet.  That's all that this study basically states.

its been proven time and time again, internet commentators don't represent what happens in reality. people can do their little childish reddit or twitter campaigns, but the rest of the world doesn't operate like that.

Without trying to sound too fanboyish and making excuses, this could be because people use the iPhone more.. there have been studies in the past that suggest the majority of mobile web browsing and app downloads come from the iPhone rather than, say, Android.

Hasnt Samsung sold more galaxies than the Iphone 5? Either 3 or 4 but I'm sure I read apple does not have the best selling smartphone title anymore.

I mean that people *use* iPhones more.. not just buy them.

More galaxies than the iPhone 5, sure.  But not more Galaxy S4 handsets than the iPhone 5.  Source: http://www.theverge.com/2013/7/3/4489460/samsung-galaxy-s4-20-million-shipments

Apple still has the single best selling handset, but its pretty marginal these days.

A friend mine went with S3 over S4 I don't really think S4 is best phone on the market right now.  A lot reviewers like the HTC one. I really don't think iphone 5 is that bad I like it also.

It's hated because now it's cool to hate on Apple. It's not a perfect phone, but far from hateable. In the other hand the Galaxy is the trendy phone of the moment.

People are doing exactly what they accuse Apple users of: following trends

You do realise that it loads a picture of the application in it's last state for a second or two, before the app is usable, to give the impression of speed, right?

I get that perhaps my iPhone is a dodgy model, which is why I had it swapped in store, with the same results, in fact just googling iPhone 5 wifi problems gives a link to a massive thread on apples own forums indicating it's a common issue.

I stand by my statement, my 4S was better than this piece of crap
