Stray dog evades animal control for five years

Recommended Posts

FAYETTEVILLE, AR ?Fayetteville Animal Services has a plan to catch a stray dog that has evaded the organization since 2008.

The search for Lucky Black Dog, or ?LBD,? has city-wide attention, and officials have a plan to catch him.

?He?s infamous, that?s for sure,? said Tony Rankin of Fayetteville Animal Services.

Rankin and his team said they have exhausted about every option to catch the stray dog. The dog has gotten away 92 times.

Animal Services even used a tranquilizer dart, but without luck.

?It?s very frustrating, because we?re hired to do a job and that job is to pick up loose animals,? Rankin said. ?It?s part of that job, anyway. When you feel that you can?t fulfill those job requirements, you feel like you haven?t gotten your job done.?

Joan Threet said the dog gets a little too close and it was time for him to get off the streets.

?He finds friends and he runs around with friends,? Threet said. ?Even if I?m walking my dog, he?ll come up and harass my dog. He?s brazen.?

The dog has an issue that has divided the Washington-Willow neighborhood for years. Jan Ragland said the dog likes its freedom.

?I?ve seen it on my porch,? she said. ?I?ll see it in my yard. I?ll see it in other people?s yard(s). It doesn?t appear to want a home.?

if they catch the dog they will put it down.... cause in america they just kill anything they can.... hope this dog eludes capture for as long as it can, if it does not, then its dead.

Yeah, cause nowhere else do they keep the animal population in check so they don't overrun the other wildlife and potentially injure people.  Just here.

...are you actually serious?

In the southeast they do euthanize a lot of animals. Most of the country they do not.

I don't see the point in catching the dog.

If they are going to kill it, that would be unethical and bad publicity.

If they adopt out the dog, it will likely just run away, at the first chance.

Stray animals can spread diseases that domesticated animals are generally required to be given shots for.

I can't really claim to know how animal control works anywhere, though my brother in law works for the DNR so he could probably tell you.

^ My dog never 'spread a disease' in 11 years of life, and all he might have had are rabies shots.

And my cat runs free, and no diseases among the other cats, are ever reported.

Considering rabies is one of the biggest concerns I'm not really sure what you're going for.  Domesticated animals are also generally healthy so wouldn't spread disease anyway.

So vaccinate the stray dog, and let him alone in peace.

Who's paying for vaccinating every dog?  Who guarantees it was taken care of?  Who makes sure its puppies are equally well cared for?  Whose problem is it if it can't be found and does end up with a bad infection or disease and spreads it or ends up biting other animals or people?

Wherein we're back to the whole point of animal control in the first place, to make sure animals stay no threat to people.
