PS4 is outselling the Xbox One in all pre-order markets by large percentages,

PS4 even has 3 games in the top pre-order list for this week when the console isn't even out, while the Xbox One has zero.

http://www.vgchartz.com/preorders/

Also note that this is the US pre-orders which were predominately an Xbox base.

Wasn't some retailer bundling PS4 with games? (i.e. you couldn't buy just PS4 )

According to the official Xbox website it is not a Gaming Console, but an all-in-one Entertainment System instead.

So Gaming is not entertainment anymore? I learn something new everyday.

Nintendo called, they'd like you all to remember that they called their first console the Nintendo Entertainment System.

Good stuff. They should in no way consider removing the Kinect and dropping the price just to please a few "toys out of the pram" types.

Man, this thread is filled with flamebait and trolling.

I just don't get the anger at MS offering non gaming features on a game console. Sony is doing the same thing. Neither console is a pure gaming device. You will never see such a thing again from either of these companies.

I think the reason MS gets singled out here is purely due to how they talked about it, not the reality for both consoles. MS had one event that laid out their general system features and non gaming entertainment options. Then they devoted E3 entirely to gaming. Sony had one event where they went over general specs and some gaming talk and then E3 was a mix of gaming and non gaming features. Take away the drm pr stunt they pulled at the end and Sony wasn't all that impressive gaming wise.

My question is this, for those of you that feel MS is not focused enough on gaming, what would it take to convince you otherwise?

They show off a strong lineup at E3; they say over and over again that gaming is a focus for them (spending a billion over the first year on new titles); they make a point not to push Kinect only experiences (since many core gamers have no interest in motion controlled titles) and instead play up its uses as a hybrid control with a controller; they offer a console with good hardware to be exploited and a controller that is highly praised for the improved d-pad but sticks to the design gamers like; and they improve XBL with things like dedicated servers for ALL games, Skype for cross game chat, only one Gold account per console, and increasing cloud storage from 512mb on the 360 to many gigabytes on the X1.

Look, I'm all for criticizing real problems or debating features, but the notion that the X1 isn't focused on gaming is silly in my opinion. To me, both the X1 and ps4 are all around entertainment devices. At 400 or 500, its no shock they would focus on more than gaming. The ps3 and 360 were also all around systems, in fact its that generation that started the tend in that direction. Sony championed that idea with its 'it only does everything' pr campaign and pushing Bluray. Both companies have a history and interest in offering all around systems. If you have no interest in those things, then pick the console with the games you like, that is what it boils down to.

Seriously give it a rest. My god ...

Most people who criticized the One are actually fans of the XBox brand. I know i am, or was cause i'm planning to buy the PS4 as i already have a PVR and want a game console. I can buy a PS4 with 2 games for the price of a One. Done deal. I surely don't want to have a useless kinect lying behind my TV gathering dust cause i can't disconnect it and put it in a drawer.

I was talking about false rumors, not critic.

And the playstation is a computer.

despite that, they're both game console.

I say surprise gamers and have a DECENT Kinect games pre-installed and a high def movie that can be altered w/Kinect.

That way people won't have anything further to complain about (though they will find something else to nitpick about)

Be funny Microsoft announces that the XB1 is now $449.99... That would grab attention QUICK....

By flame-bait you mean facts?

A lot of people here get upset when anyone posts real information about the console.

All-In-One Entertainment System is what Microsoft call it, I didn't say Sony wasn't an entertainment system. Both are, long gone are the days of a solely gaming system.

But with that being said, Sony are more gaming focused than Microsoft, they don't have TV inputs, nor paid $400 million for a NFL deal, nor are paying for TV series to be produced specifically for the system.

Its also why PS4's hardware specs are higher than the Xbox Ones, Xbox's focus is on taking over your living room instead of just being a gaming console.

So instead of trying to defend the fact that the Xbox One has lower hardware specs or not solely gaming focused why not counter with the extra features it does have, Some of you here are as bad as Microsoft when it comes to PR about the Xbox One.

We already did talk about the cloud assist.  We could talk about the excellent hardware audio chip too, but Sony supposedly has one of those too...that nobody knows anything about.

It's all been said before.  I just find the theory that the X1 isn't as much a gaming machine as the PS4 ridiculous.

Dude...sony owns a freaking movie studio not to mention Sony Music. They have a partnership with FIFA. Enough with this lame "sony is more gaming focused because XB1 has a TV input"  bull****. They both want your entertainment dollars and that includes your gaming dollars.

Nah, I love to see the facts laid out. Its the other BS that just stirs up trouble. I wasn't even talking about the facts you mentioned, so I wouldn't get so defensive about it. I agree with you that some people attack facts unfairly, but you have to admit that some also like to stir up trouble by blowing up facts or just bashing things. It happens.

Let's boils down your facts and then your opinions:

Facts: both consoles are all around systems with the goal of offering gaming and non gaming entertainment

Opinion: Sony is more focused on gaming than MS

I agree with your facts, I'm not so sure about your opinion. Including HDMI-in, making a deal with the NFL or securing exclusive media content doesn't negate MS' gaming focus considering the money they are spending in the first year on game titles and the new ip we saw at E3. It also doesn't negate the other gaming features that have already been laid out (I spelled those out in my post that you quoted).

Also, the idea that the ps4 having a more powerful gpu means MS cares less is hard to accept consider Nintendo continuously builds weaker consoles but can still offer compelling games and be considered 'focused' on gaming.

Sony is certainly focusing on gaming, but E3 showed me that both consoles will have a strong gaming focus. Arguing over which is more focused has a lot to do with how you feel about the games which is subjective. If you hate all the games coming to the X1 and like the ps4 games, then I could see why some would think MS is less focused on gaming. If you just prefer Sony's platform, that's cool. Honestly, I'm convinced to own both, I'm just deciding which to get first which comes down to the launch lineup I prefer.

This.

As long as a console manufacturer is able to provide a compelling gaming experience who cares if it has a weaker GPU, HDMI in, motion sensing or a small nuclear reactor?

Another good example is Apple - just because they focus heavily on creating additional compelling experiences on their iPhones that don't necessarily require actual "phone" functionality doesn't detract from the fact that it's still a phone.

Likewise, MS (and Sony) are trying to do the same. Have good core gaming functionality with lots of extra goodies that the consumer will like.

For what I've seen from the XB1 so far, I'm sold... I don't care about a$100 and a graphics card upgrade... I care about an experience that will last a decade... Not be limited in 3-4yrs. I care about a cloud that will get better, as developers learn to use it better, and ISP's the world over get better and better (my Internet speeds are already awesome personally).. I don't mind paying $10 a year for a camera (if the xb1 was designed to last a decade, and the Kinect was built in conjunction with it, that means Kinect was designed to last and expand its ability for a decade as well)... All of this for $500 not bad...

"Gamers" keep crying they want to hear the term game console first, get over it. Once you go over $400 for a box, I don't want to hear game console first... Games are a given, what else can it do for $400-$500?... Think calling it a Entertainment Console, gonna make Bioware, EA, Activision, Remedy, Respawn, 2K, Rock Star, not bother with it???

Though I do have a PS4 on reserve as well, I still don't know what $400 gets me. Other than a new graphics card. Sony, should be packing in a Vita in every PS4 and selling it at $500.. I think a price increase would be wise for Sony. They need the money ASAP.. The streaming to Vita is a darn smooth idea, but nobody is running out to buy one to experience it.

To me reading your post, it seems like the only reason MS isn't as focused on games as Sony is because they're offering more of a choice on their system?

From the the information I've read there's a couple of points which suggest MS are trying more than Sony.

  • Spending $1 Billion on 1st party exclusive IP's
  • Getting developer feedback on the hardware to ensure the console is as good as it can get
  • More exclusives and new IP's

During E3, the focus was primarily on games. Lets face it, both companies are equally trying just as hard to get the money out of our pockets to buy one of their shiny boxes. MS has got more infrastructure and cash in the bank to expand and explore their system. I hope it pulls of for them, the TV features do genuinly interest me since my 360 is the hub of my living room. For many other games its the same. I know my friends all pretty much use the 360 as the hub of their house. If you don't use/like the TV functionality, don't use it, its then a killer games console. I honestly don't see the frustration.

They key thing your pointed out is $1 Billion... I think that $$$ amount is beyond a lot of peoples comprehension (I know its well out of my league.)... That figure alone will be the KEY behind XB1 success...

Here is a link for Top 10 expensive games for 2010, http://digitalbattle...e-budgets-ever/ , those titles equaled up to $618million, and these are all different publishers

Microsoft is investing $1 billion alone into the XB1.

And I'm gonna take a stab at that number increasing, as the XB1 gains traction

In my Dr. Evil voice: "$$$ 1 BILLION $$$'s"  ......

The list you used as a source has 6 PlayStation games of which 4 were PS exclusives and 4 Xbox games which only 2 were exclusive.

Lets face it, both companies are equally trying just as hard to get the money out of our pockets to buy one of their shiny boxes. MS has got more infrastructure and cash in the bank to expand and explore their system. I hope it pulls of for them, the TV features do genuinely interest me since my 360 is the hub of my living room. For many other games its the same. I agree, both console makers are just after a profit it is why I don't believe in brand loyalty. If its a good product buy ii, if not don't buy it just cause your loyal to the company.

MS does have a bigger net worth than Sony and can afford to throw more money at it, its obvious in the fact that they signed a deal with the NFL for $400 Million to get live stats and media rights or the hundreds of millions of dollars spent in TV show productions and the billion in game development. But even then Sony has confirmed over 100 titles will be coming to the PS4 in the first year of release, which is more than what the Xbox currently has. It makes it look like Sony is tunneling most of its investments into gaming, while Microsoft are spreading it across the board.

I like the media features in the Xbox too, but I don't see myself using the TV side of things. Only netflix and streaming movies over the wi-fi but not as a gateway to live tv on cable. I do like the idea of the Quantum Leap tv show where people decide on the outcome in the tv series (possibly through gameplay?).

With Microsoft's 'cash' all they needed to do after they reversed the draconian DRM policies was take a few exclusives from the PS4 and have better hardware and it would've easily beaten the PS4. But PS4 got at-least one major Xbox developer (Bungie, Makers of Halo) to go multi-platform instead and got better hardware than the Xbox which kept it in the running.
