Steam's annual Summer Sale begins with deep price cuts

by John Callaham

Twice a year, Valve opens up the flood gates on its Steam PC game download service and cuts prices across the board on most of the games in its library. One event happens between Christmas and New Year's Day, and the other is the Summer Sales event. Today, that event kicked off and will last until July 22nd.

In fact, demand for the sales on Steam is so great, its official website is getting slammed by traffic, so if you are having issues reaching the site, you might want to wait for a few hours before checking out the price cuts. Valve will have a different group of games with price reductions every day. For example, you can get BioShock Infinite for $29.99, Left 4 Dead 2 for $4.99 and Hotline Miami for just $2.49 for the next 24 hours.

There will also be flash sales on other games that will last for just a few hours. At the moment, they include Elder Scrolls V Skyrim Legendary Edition for $35.99 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive for just $5.09.

Various games on Steam now have virtual Steam Trading Cards attached to them. Players can collect and trade them with other Steam users and they can also be turned into game badges and tradable Steam community items.

It may have started, but offerings so far are kinda lame. Early days though.
