Police shoot rottweiler in front of owner

Recommended Posts

I just can't believe the number of comments on youtube saying the police are in the wrong. If I am armed and an owner losses control of his ROTTWEILER and it gets aggressive JUMPS at me! I'm going to shoot it. You do not want to **** around with a rottweiler.

All of those people saying the cops are in the wrong and how they are evil and blah blah blah, I want to put them in a room with a ###### off rottweiler and shut the door.

Yeah, I think if I was in the cop's position, I also would have dropped the dog like third period French.  That dog could've done some serious damage.  The owner should have rolled the windows up enough so the dog couldn't escape.

Un-arrest the guy, tell him to take control of his dog, or even shoot warning shots into the air to spook the animal.

'MERIKA way: shoot to kill first, ask questions later.

lol, because a dog knows what a warning shot is.

I'm sure it says in the police hand book "If dog is trying maul your arm off, shoot a warning shot and maybe he'll stop"

So, police illegally arrest a guy for quite legally filming them, his dog tries to protect its master, and they kill it without even giving the guy a chance to control it.

Not only that, but they also leave it to writhe in agony as it dies.

I hope they're fired.

Its certainly sad it had to come to that, but hesitating when faced with a dog like that isn't going to lead to a better outcome. Likely a cop would've been hurt and then they'd shoot it anyhow.

Not even that some reports on outlets say he was arrested because of the volume of music playing from his car and walking too close to a crime scene.

Officers handcuffed bystander Leon Rosby, 52, after he walked close to the scene with an 80-pound Rottweiler on a ?long leash-line," creating ?an increasingly dangerous situation,? the Hawthorne Police Department said in statement.

Utterly ridiculous.

Also seems like there could be more to it:

"Gulden told The Times that police were retaliating against Rosby for a lawsuit filed in March against the department, alleging excessive use of force and false imprisonment in a July 2012 incident.

According to the lawsuit?s complaint, officers beat Rosby at his home and in jail after responding to a domestic quarrel call made by Rosby?s wife.

All charges against Rosby, 52, stemming from last year?s incident were dropped, Gulden said, calling the argument between the couple that prompted the call a "misunderstanding.""Gulden said one of the officers at Sunday?s incident in Hawthorne had been on duty during Rosby?s alleged beating last year and recognized him as a ?troublemaker.?

They won't. US police are pretty damn corrupt.

While it was inhumane to let it suffer like that ( and it breaks my heart to see the dog shot), the dog did lunge at the officer, it is clearly in the video.  What response would you have?  Mace it?  Taze it?  I had my rotts walk through an electrified fence, yelp, and keep going.  I had them ignore shock collars.  I doubt mace would have done much.

I had to pull one of my rotts off an animal in a blood craze.  It took a shotgun butt to the nose to dislodge them from the throat of one of our goats.  Warning shot?  Ignored.  Water?  ignored.  Me kicking and punching it?  ignored.

The man was hardly resisting arrest so the logical thing to do would have been to let the man go and put his dog back in the car.

I know it's near the very end, but as soon as the dog started rolling in pain I couldn't watch any more. It just felt so sick.

Nothing, not even the worst creatures in life deserve to be in pain like he/she clearly was .

Hopefully that cops ass is handed to him. I mean, seriously what's wrong with the music at that level during the day? I could understand at 11pm onwards, but seriously WTF?! And last time I saw, it was legal to film the police in the US...

Oh hold on, let me undo these handcuffs while your dog is attacking me. You go get your pet under control and come back afterwards, mmkay?

Fair play, the dog went for them.  Unarrest the guy?  Get real.

Right.

Uncuff guy, guy runs, or possibly draws a gun (they never searched him) and fires on them.

Uncuffing the guy would be pretty stupid.

He shouldn't have been cuffed in the first place.  Filming police, OR playing music in your car, isn't an arrestable offence. They just didn't like that he was filming them.

The cops are wholly to blame for this entire incident.

If I was a police officer and someone positioned themselves to be cuffed, I would probably cuff them until I found out what was going on as well.  If you go to a police station and put your hands behind your back, they are probably going to cuff you as well, if nothing else to sort things out.

Unless I missed part of the audio, I don't hear them telling him to put his hands behind his back beforehand.

They start walking towards him, he goes to his car.  I am aware that he was putting his dog away, but they don't know he wasn't getting a gun.

Better safe than dead.

He immediately put his hands behind his back so they can't hit him with a resisting arrest charge. They commonly throw this charge against minorities for just questioning why they are being arrested.

The reality is there was no valid grounds for an arrest. If they hadn't done an unjustified arrest the dog wouldn't be dead. This is what everyone is upset about.

It amazes me  how much race gets thrown around on Neowin.

The cop fired a warning shot right? Yeah, didn't work. This breed of dog is absolutely vicious! It had to be shot. But yeah, the cop should have at least shot it in the head or something so it would have died sooner.

This breed seriously should NOT be allowed as a pet. It is just too unpredictable and lethal when it attacks.

We will have to agree to disagree.

Any breed can be vicious and unpredictable.

I've owned rotts.  They are not unpredictable.  Mess with their owners, the results are actually pretty predictable.  They will move to protect.

Owner had his windows down, and if he didn't know the dog would jump out in this situation, then he is an idiot.

The comments on this thread are the DUMBEST BS comments I have ever seen on Neowin. The police acted unprofessional. Did you people even watch the video? Anyone who says that uncuffing him was not the right thing to do for him to safely secure that dog is an absolute moron. If you say that with a straight face, it means you didn't watch anything of that video but the part where the dog was shot. How do we know this? The guy put the dog up and walked to the police so they could arrest him. The man didn't run. He didn't fight back. NOTHING. He put the dog up because he knew he was being arrested. When he tried to stop the dog, the police wouldn't let him. This is the polices fault and they should be sued. The man was peaceful every moment of his arrest and you claim he would grab a gun or run. You are being racist if you think that. He literally walked to the police so they could arrest him. Anyone who disagrees either didn't watch the video at all or is racist. This video really ****ed me off. Police that do something this unprofessional **** me off. The man was no threat to them and all they had to do was let him put the dog back in the car where he put it originally so they could arrest him. But no, the dog had to die because the police are to stupid for that or just wanted an excuse to kill it. That breed of dog is not vicious in any way unless it was trained to be. Fun fact, you can't walk this breed of dog if its been trained to be vicious. If you had watched the video, you'd notice the part where the man is in public walking the dog. The same dog that backed up when the owner told him to, only to have the owner swung around away from the dog so the police could shoot it. Why did the dog jump out of the car? The police were "handling" its owner. Any dog that has any loyalty to its owner reacts this way. He didn't jump at the police until the police went after it. A warning shot would have made the dog run. The only way it wouldn't have is if the dog was trained to be around firearms. Are you people really so retarded to think the police did nothing wrong? This entire situation was wrongly handled by the police and I hope the get their asses sued from under them. You don't shoot somebodies pet after the owner is clearly capable of calming it down and controlling it, you know, like he was doing just before the police swung him around against his will for trying to save his dog from being shot. This video shows the perversion of cops and quite frankly the lack of intelligence and a bit of racism from many members of Neowin. The dog wasn't violent and could have been controlled. And people say Americans are blood thirsty and all you Europeans claiming this dog should be put down and more blood thirsty than any American I have ever talked to. Scared of a dog because of ignorance. So much so that you think the right thing to do is put it down and not let the owner keep it calm. ######ing morons...
