Restaurant owner fires employees by text message

It?s never a message anyone wants to hear: You?re fired. But getting a pink slip by text message came as a shock.

Local Florida station WFTV reported that Jodi Jackson, a chef who had worked for Barducci's Italian Bistro in Winter Park, Florida, found out she was out of a job by a text message from owner Gregory Kennedy.

"I think it's immoral. I think it's cowardice," Jackson told WFTV. The text message to the staffer on July 4 read, ?I unfortunately need to inform you that I have been forced to close Barducci's effective immediately."

According to the cook, at least 12 other employees received the same message. The surprise Fourth of July firing gave no notice, the employee said. The restaurant is now shut down, and Jackson says the workers are waiting for their final paychecks.

"I think we all deserve our compensation for money he's already made from us," Jackson told the TV station.

Customers who had purchased Groupon deals for the restaurant also worried they would not be refunded. "Now I'm thinking about how I'm going to get my money back from that," Lauren Bartolome, standing in front of the shuttered eatery, told the TV station. "I don't know what to do now."

However, Groupon told the TV station that it will give customers a refund.

The issue of employee pay, however, still seems to be unresolved. When a WFTV reporter tried to contact the restaurant owner for a comment, he finally replied to her?by text.

?Unfortunately businesses are forced to close across Orlando every day especially in the restaurant sector," Kennedy sent by cellphone message. ?I am working to resolve issues including final paychecks as quickly as possible."

.  Everyone turns up to work on Friday only to be told to not work, and to meet in the kitchen, where we are all made redundant without notice.  He was on site - oh yes, hidden away up in his office and refusing to see people.  He even hid his car in fears anyone would attack it on the way out.  He'd also not paid us for a month, knowing the government would fulfill what should have been his obligation under any normal leadership.

 

I could call him all the names under the sun - coward, shortsighted, manipulative, cheat - but none of it matters because he is infinitely richer than me, and moreover seem to have no remorse for the way he acted when he retires to his country house in his Lambo!

I can see why you are ######... but in the original story here i think the woman is a fool for wanting "compensation", we dont know why the place shut down? sure if he knew it was going down so he should have warned people... but 1, what if he didnt know? a mass text is easier... 2, if the business as salvageable why tell your employees its going down? all of a sudden you are getting people calling in sick (looking for other work) people quiting on you and just general morale lowering ... there is a million and one reasons this could have happened the way it did...  I do see it as a bit of a douche move but come on? it was efficient.

Compensation is a term for money owed.  They are simply seeking to be paid for the time they worked.

"Compensation" is one of those words that has been misappropriated due to the connotations it carries.  If you have a job and are paid, you are compensated by means of remuneration.  That basically means, you are paid.
