Cerny: "No negative feedback on Dualshock 4"

Cerny added that "first-person shooters are very important to us", and so he went to the key teams that make FPS games to ask for their feedback.
 
"We went to key teams who make the best of the best and we got their specific feedback on trigger springiness, concavity or convexity of joysticks and deadzones, and tuned the controller through a succession of prototypes to what it is today.
 
"The result is we showed at E3 and I did not hear ? and it?s a tough audience ? I did not hear any negative feedback about the controller."

Lead system architect Mark Cerny has revealed that, during the DualShock 4's development, Sony trialled gamepads capable of measuring players' galvanic skin response. It's a measure of how conductive your skin is at any given time, which varies based on how much you're sweating. When you're stressed, you sweat more, and that's why galvanic skin response is often used in lie-detecting polygraph tests.
 
"We had a long research project where we looked at pretty much any idea we could think of," says Cerny, in an exclusive conversation with Stuff. "Would it help to measure the galvanic response of the skin? We tried out a tremendous number of things - and then we went to the game teams to ask them what they thought they could use from the controller."

 

 

"Historically we have heard many times that our controllers have not been ideal for first-person shooters," he admits, "so we wanted to make sure we had something that would be much better for that genre. We tested the throw of the triggers, the position of the triggers, how much pressure it takes. We looked at the joysticks, the dead spot, we looked at convexity and concavity." The end result, he says, "feels extraordinarily natural."

If they've sorted the trigger problem the DS3 had. Then it'll be a decent controller.

My main gripe with the DS3 was the triggers, they were pointless.

They are though. :p

 

Obviously the guy wasn't listening if he thinks there was no negative feedback about it.

Well at least they fixed it... As much as I've been dogging Sony... they actually took the time to improve the DS controller...

I personally don't like where the Sticks are (my hands are kinda big, so they always feel like they are touching)...

But a TON of people love the placement of the Sticks...

 

Touch pad has my attention as well... How easy will it be to keep accidentally touching it... 0 o?

I think they increased the distance between the sticks to combat that issue.

DS4 looks more substantial than previous controllers. I took the 3rd party grips off of my DS3 the other day and was surprised how small the thing is without them.

As much as people had the PS Controllers, I much prefer them to (what I feel to be awkward)  Xbox Controllers.  I much prefer my hands to be side by side, not with one up further than the other.

No negative feedback except that always on light (which they will fix it I guess by release).

Do you play games that only use the thumbsticks?  If not, then your hands are actually crooked when using buttons on the PS controller.

On the Xbox controller, your hands are side by side since most games use the left thumb stick and the 4 buttons.

I play games that require the thumbsticks yes.  Maybe it's because the PS Controller is smaller I don't notice I'm holding it crooked, or.. the sticks being at the bottom instead of top..  I dunno.  Maybe it's because I have used a PS controller since the PS1 came out so when I put my hands into "holding a controller" pose they instantly take form of a PS controller.

Honestly I've never been a Playstation person, I've never owned on before. I think their controllers were crap prior to the PS3 which was slightly better, but not much. That said, this new controller looks great to me.I haven't held it, but it looks much better at least. I really do wish the thumbsticks were like the 360's layout, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. I'm excited to try it out when my PS4 gets here! :D

You're holding it wrong. Only the thumb needs to be at a different angle/place not your whole hand.

This one area that I think we can all agree both companies did very well for the next gen.

 

I have yet to hear of any serious issues with the PS4 or X1 controllers. Both did the right thing by not making radical changes, but just evolving already mature designs.

 

I may favor the split stick design of an Xbox controller, but I have no problem with the ps4 controller. They added some distance between the sticks which will help. On the X1 side, they tackled the d-pad issue, so I'm excited to try both of these out myself.

That's good, but maybe they can also build in a software setting for users to disable it as well. I don't think it would be a technical issue.

 

Personally, I don't mind it there as long as it doesn't interfere with the game, but an option is nice.
