PITTSBURGH ?  Pittsburgh police say a 6-year-old boy went for an officer's gun and then bit the officer before being sent for psychiatric treatment.

The Associated Press is not identifying the boy because he is too young to be charged with a crime in Pennsylvania.

Police on Monday revealed the incident happened Friday evening when Officer Paul Abel encountered the boy and several other children accused of stealing bicycles.

Police say the officer held the boy away from his body to control him, but the boy tried to kick out the windows of a squad car and was briefly handcuffed for his own safety.

Cmdr. RaShall Brackney says the officer is upset because he "had to use force on a 6-year-old" whose face was bruised during the incident.

The boy tells WPXI-TV: "I tried to take the cop's gun."
