Just a question about SSDs.

I was wondering this morning whether people still split their games into one partition, programs into another and such?

I have:

Two normal hard drives.

Total Space: 1TB

Split Into 6 partitions (OS, Documents, Programs, Games, Temporary Storage, Archive).

If you have a mix of hard drives, what do you put on which hard drive?

I have one SSD on 128GB and one HDD 256GB, both only have 1 partition each.

On the SSD I store the OS, of course, and heavily used programs as my browser and IDE. On the HDD I store my libraries, games and miscellaneuos other programs.

1x 128 GB SSD stores OS (partition 1) and desktop (which is sort of working folder for me) and installations of programs and games (partition 2)

1x 1 TB HDD stores documents, downloads, audio and video files (partition 3)

1x 160 GB HDD stores cat pictures and junk I'll never sort through, but was vitally important for me to obtain and keep (partition 4)

I use 3 HDD's at the moment, (am looking into a new build, finances are not as generous as I had origionally thought)

1 (C drive regular partition) 80gig Just with Windows, and default installations that cannot be installed in other drives.

1 (D drive, regular partition) 500gig For all my media files, pictures, movies, music, etc...

1 (E drive, regular partition) 320gig For all my games, and installations that can be set to other drives, (Basically, all programs that can be drive specified by their installers go here)

2TB (TV)

2x 1TB in RAID 0 (Games & Other Data)

My setup when I order my new drive will be this:

2x 2TB in RAID 0 (TV)

2x 1TB in RAID 0 (Games & Other Data)

120 SSD, 300 HDD, 1TB external HDD all with no additional partitioning. No one type of media belongs to any particular drive, but the 1TB ends up getting most of the archival material.

There was a time that I would split off partitions for other OS's but now I prefer virtualization.

3 SSDs in RAID 5 for my system drive. Plus a 3TB, 2 TB, and 1 TB HDD, and an external 320 GB HDD, so around 7 GB and about 7 partitions.

My primary computer is my laptop, which has one 128 GB SSD and one 1 TB hard drive. I voted for "4 or 5" partitions, but I think my vote might actually skew the results a little since if I was running Windows, which I assume most of the other voters are, I would have voted for "2 or 3" partitions. I now have 4 partitions on my SSD, the first is /boot, the second is swap, the third is /, and the fourth is /home. This is a fairly normal partition layout for a Linux system (although more and more often people are dropping the separate /boot partition). I have no partitions on my hard disk; the whole disk is formatted as BTRFS. However in the spirit of this poll I think that counts as my fifth partition.

I have games installed on three partitions. Xonotic is installed on my root partition along with my operating system and most of the other programs I have installed, including some large proprietary software like MATLAB. Steam, Team Fortress II, Half-Life II, and Minecraft are installed in my home folder. My remaining Steam games, such as Portal, are installed on my larger hard disk because I don't play them as often and space on my SSD is limited. If I had a larger SSD, all of my games would be installed on it rather than split like they are now. I don't typically spend much time gaming - and therefore don't have a huge number of games - so even a 256 GB SSD would give me enough space to have everything installed on it, leaving my hard drive exclusively for my documents, pictures, videos, and other data.

  • 2 weeks later...

In my laptop I have:

2 Toshiba SSD's, 64GB, in RAID0, one partition

1TB Hitachi HDD, three partitions (600GB general, 200GB photos, 131GB experimentation).

In my desktop:

2 x 640GB Samsung HDD's

2 x 1TB Western Digital HDD's

All split into way too many partitions, unfortunately.

Internal hard drive is something like 750 GB.

1 SWAP partition of 4 GB

1 System partition formatted in EXT4 that takes up the rest of the space

I also have an external hard drive that's 2 TB in size, and it's all one EXT4 partition.  I use it as my "Storage" drive.

My main desktop isn't that crazy. It has a 512GB SSD and a 1TB HDD for storage.

I just gave away an assorted mix of 7 HDDs and SSDs to free up some space in the place.

That being said, the network itself in my house has a fair bit more storage on it, but I have been paring it down compared to previous years.

1 x 240Gb SSD - OS, select multiplayer games, applications

1 x 750Gb 5400rpm HDD - downloads, singleplayer games and the odd MP game I don't play very often

1 x 1Tb External - music library, films, TV and a few singeplayer games.

I need to get some more storage because not only am I starting to run out, but the 750gb will be turning 7 years old this year and is starting to get a bit temperamental :(
