Extremely slow Mac Mini, speeds up after 15+ mins or so...

Recommended Posts

My Mac Mini (OS X 10.6.8) is running extremely slow. It takes longer than normal to boot, and then runs slow to the point where it can't really be used at all for the first 15 mins or so. After this, it seems to run like normal, although it does occasionally slow down to a crawl again.

Booting in Safe Mode, it seems to be okay as well, although still takes a while to boot. I have tried repairing disk permissions, verifying the HDD, checking startup items etc.

I can get Activity Monitor to open after a couple minutes of waiting, but there's no abnormally high CPU, RAM or disk utilization.

It's only been happening for a couple of weeks, before that it was fine. I don't think I had installed anything around that time either.

It's driving me nuts, so any help would be much appreciated!

If you open up spotlight, does it show up with a "indexing" indicator?

I had this issue in the past, every time I started my Macbook from a cold boot, spotlight would try to reindex my whole hard drive.

What version of the Mac Mini do you have - year/specs?

Mid-2010, OS X 10.6.8, Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz, 2GB RAM, 320GB HDD.

Yes, it did, so I tried disabling Spotlight by using the command "sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist", but after restarting, unfortunately it's still just as slow. :(
