VLC for iOS

After waiting for 2.5 years due to licensing issues, VLC has finally come back to iOS...

According to developers comments on FB, it won't hit US servers until after midnight EST. They're slowly rolling it out to various countries.

Hmm, I still have the original VLC for iOS on my device. We'll see which one is better..

The URL to the stream you'd like to open...you'd have to know what you wanted to open, it's not something you browse.

I noticed that they have bad reviews there... talking about audio.

Was using GPlayer, but VLC supports proper subtitles. Would like support for folders and then it'll be almost perfect.

Have you tried Moliplayer? Have been using it for months now and never been disappointed. Much much better than VLC in its current form. And, it's free too!

Looks great so far, but the subtitles aren't 100% like what you would see on a desktop player. Not bad though!

 

It seems Moliplayer uses hardware acceleration but not sure about VLC? There was a bit about third party applications not being able to use hardware acceleration but not sure if it's completely true.

Wouldn't VLC be able to convert on the fly without hardware acceleration ?

I would assume if it was a h.264 encoded video that it'll offload it to the video chip instead of making the CPU decode the video on the fly. I don't know if VLC chooses to decode everything via the CPU.

I'm pretty sure it uses the HW for decoding H.264 and the CPU for everything else, these devices aren't really powerful enough to docode H.264 in software.
