'You will have to shoot through the baby to get me'

PENSACOLA, FL ?  A Pensacola woman has been arrested after authorities say they tried arrest her for shoplifting and she threw the baby at a deputy as she tried to escape.

Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office said Ashley Taylor Wright tried to smuggle about $260 worth of clothing from a Dillard's dressing room. Deputies approached her car in the parking lot Monday night and asked her to get out.

Authorities said the 23-year-old told the deputy, "You will have to shoot through the baby to get me." She then allegedly ran from the car and threw the car seat with the baby inside at the deputy. The infant was not injured. Two other young children were also in the car.

The Pensacola News Journal reports Wright faces several charges including child abuse.

I would be all for a series of tests required to get a license for parenthood. People should effectively be assessed on whether they should be allowed to have Children.

From parenthood

Tod: You know, Mrs. Buckman, you need a license to buy a dog, to drive a car - hell, you even need a license to catch a fish. But they'll let any butt-reaming ###### be a father.

That's just quick thinking if you ask me... Probably bought her a good 10-15 second head start on those cops.

BTW, she knew they'd catch it. Who's gonna let a baby hit the ground? :)

Seriously, is this any worse than the Chinese lady who flushed her newborn down the toilet? These kind of stories always remind me of Anthony Soprano's mother coming over for dinner and bringing up the most horrific news stories she'd heard of.

You could cover all of these stories forever with one Onionesque like post: "Breaking News: People Do Insane Things"

To everyone saying that you should have to get a license to be a parent: I agree, and you should also have to undergo a rigorous process to obtain a license to own a gun as well.

Lies! Guns don't kill people, car seats tossed with babies inside kill people!

That's why the people should go through the rigorous process of getting a license, not the gun.

And, since you bring it up, maybe we should start licensing car seats too... You're right :)

And a few posts in we already go from baby tossing parents to gun licenses.

Anyway, as others said, lock her up and toss away the key, any idiot can be a parent these days it seems.

Terrible. Take the baby, put it up for adoption, and lock her up.

I think the taxpayers would rather not have their money keeping her locked up.

just take her out back and put her down

The baby didn't get hurt, and it is fairly funny in a dark, twisted evil kind of way. I have to admit my first thought was "That Baby wouldn't slow a bullet at all".

What's next, making sure parents have "enough" money? I mean, we can't have poor people breeding. Perhaps parents should be made to undergo regular checks for illegal substances too? Afterall, we don't want parents taking drugs (apart from those on the "approved" list, like alcohol and caffeine). What about people with depression? They might pose a risk to the children.

Children should be taken away from abusive or neglectful parents, as sounds reasonable in this case, but it's very dangerous to start dictating who can reproduce.

I understand you're being facetious but none of this sounds like too bad of an idea to me.

The people of Germany felt the same under the leadership of a certain Mr Hitler yet few would argue we should adopt the same policies. While requirements on parenthood may sound sensible in theory the reality is very different, as it gives too much power to the government. If you look at the way that government policy is influenced by massive corporations and wealthy individuals you could easily end up with a system whereby only the wealthy elite are allowed to reproduced, whether it be in the name of population control or the public good. The more appropriate action is to take a tough stance on those who pose a risk to their children, whether that risk be depriving them of education, allowing them to become dangerously overweight or?as in this case?throwing them at police officers.

Absolutely, but mandatory parenting classes in school might go a long way towards helping.  And I don't mean just proper sex education either. I mean actual classes about raising a child; at least a term/semester's worth.

If you have to ask "What's next" then your argument is effectively just hot air. I didn't suggest we do those things you mentioned, One thing doesn't automatically mean it leads to another. People opposing gay marriage were spouting "What's next? Beastiality?" I mean look at the checks you have to go to adopt a Child, they assess you as parents, they assess your home for suitability. And make a decision. Many animal shelters also have these checks before they'll let you adopt. Checks like this would help cut down on Chavettes who already have 17 kids and use them as leverage for more benefits and to move up the ladder for Council Housings.
