I am sure this will spin off into a new accessory. Kinect flap cover. With tag line "Protect your precious investment by hiding it under cover when not in use. Of course we are referencing Kinect"

The cover could be removed on starting the Xbox One. I bet that once started, it will throw tantrums if the Kinect cover is still on.

It's no different than with laptops, tablets, and every other device with a camera on it. It's always been a possibility to be spied on.

But no one seems to think of that, they just bash the XBOX acting like Kinect is such a bad thing. Personally I don't give a ######!!

They could - the difference is that Skype is already a video calling service that sends raw voice and video out to another person.  Kinect is not that.  It's a fancy camera that captures your movements and listens for voice commands to be used on the console, not sent to some other party to watch (unless of course you're using the Skype app).  The infrastructure is different.

yep, and all it need to act like silent/stealthy 'skype' just an 'updates' for xbox one OS/App/Firmware.

The hardware infrastructure are ready, only the software to do that is still 'incomplete'.

Yep! Don't forgot phones.  While we are at it  better not drive anywhere (red light cams),  stay away from convenience stores, grocery stores, malls, banks, and almost any city!

Its microsoft hardware, running there software they can make it do what ever they want. They will have to make the changes without being able to tell anyone. If you dont like it go buy a ps4. I am buying one as i dont want the all seeing eye in my living room all the time. As the government cannot be trusted to not take advantage of it!

Not just Microsoft, but think about the third party apps and games that will be using this. The console will be running Windows, so you can bet it will also have virus, spyware... People who buy consoles don't really want to worry about that...

+1. I'll be getting a PS4 too.

I would not worry about spyware and the ilk getting onto it. The last thing they want is something bad happening while someone is watching tv or playing a game, and they get a pop up ad for viagra LOL

The bottom line is here the government cannot be trusted to not force Microsoft to abuse this hardware. If your console does not have this in the first place, then the hardware maker cannot be forced by secret court order to make it do something that it does not have the hardware for!

You are allowed to disable it.

If the stupid ###### would just allow you to disconnect it, there wouldn't be an issue. :argh:

The government could demand it all they want but it wouldn't matter because it's literally technically not how it works.  It doesn't send raw voice and video data out to anywhere so there's nothing for them to get at.  They can't just magic a connection into your Xbox One and start watching you.

What you're saying doesn't make sense. Does the Kinect sensor not have a camera and microphone? If not, I'm not sure how useful it would be for the Skype crap Microsoft was demoing...

If it has a microphone and camera then it is technically capable of recording video and sound.

What is in the software portion? No one knows (unless they have access to the source code) and even if they did it is pointless since the software can change over time.

You can bet it will be easier to exploit.

Turn camera around to face the wall. Laugh at government spies.

Seriously though, there's no reason to force people to Kinect this thing. I understand they are doing it so game publishers can write their games with the knowledge that everyone will have it, but I don't think that's a good enough reason. If publishers want to add Kinect support to their games let them make it optional or put it in the requirements on the box. Not everyone wants to use it and not allowing the console to work without it plugged in is ridiculous..

He is correct regarding the operating system. So far all Xboxs had a Windows kernel.

No, none have.

Original xbox was based on the windows 2000 kernel, it is however completely incompatible with windows and windows binaries.

Xbox 360 is powerpc architecture, nothing past NT has used powerpc architecture so once again does not feature a windows kernel.

Xbox 1 on the other hand has a hypervisor with windows 8 kernel.

So, the prevailing privacy argument against MS here is that if you have a Kinect, the government can spy on you in your living room, but if you have a PS4, they can't, or will somehow be inconvenienced and give up?

You have WAY more to fear from your Android phone. It has a camera, microphone, persistent connection, people carry them around everywhere, and there are hundreds of millions more people using them than will ever be in contact with an Xbox.

The government can also force Sony to spy on you playing your PS3/PS4 with your EyeToy. Or activate the microphone and camera in your Samsung phone.
