Dev On PS4?s RAM and Cores: ?Still Scratching Our Heads As To What To Do With It All"

We recently spoke to Compulsions Games? Sam Abbott ? currently developing Contrast for the PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. We asked him how does the PS4?s unified architecture and 8GB of RAM help bring Contrast to life.

Abbot responded that, ?Haha, well, it makes it really easy to get onto their platform! There is so much memory and so many cores on that machine we?re still scratching our head as to what to do with all of them.?

With all the talk going around about how easy it is to develop for the console, as well as to bring PC games over (as Warframe developer Digital Extremes recently attested to), we asked Abbott if it was as simple as just picking up the PC code and pasting it on to the PS4?

?It?s definitely a lot easier than on the previous generation of consoles where the architecture was much more divergent from PCs, but it?s also not as simple as cut & paste .Once the industry has had a few months to iron out its kinks, it should be much easier to develop for the PS4 than for the PS3.?

It's nice to see that PS4 has plenty of potential, I can't wait to see what the bigger devs can do with it.

I'm not buying either console, but I do very much look forward to seeing engines catching up with support for the current baseline standards of tech.

It'll be nice to see 64-bit and decent multithreading become the norm.

It's understandable. For 8 years now all the had to work with was 256MB system ram and 256MB GPU ram. Now they have 8GB. Now they have 7GB to play around with. 1 out of the 8GB is for the system.

I plan on buying the PS4.  It will be nice to see PC Quality games on the consoles.  I've always felt consoles made up for lesser games with the graphics.  Hoping to see a more unfiied gaming style.  Would love to have full on MMOs (not just FPS) on the console, MMOARPGS, etc.

With Sony not restricting free to play by allowing you to play without a PS+ subscription I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of MMOs start appearing. It is also an attractive prospect for premium MMOs as you aren't paying two lots of subscription fees just to play online unlike Xbox.

I know Warframe and Final Fantasy 14 are coming to PS4.

That's a good thing, FFXIV looks terrible on the PS3 compared to the PC version at the moment. Too much sacrifice in low res -> upscale to keep the framerate ticking over.

Didn't they say at E3 multiplayer would now become a PS+ feature going forward with the PS4?

Edit: yes they did http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/06/ps4-owners-will-need-playstation-plus-subscription-for-online-multiplayer/

Sony has explained why a PlayStation Plus subscription will be required to play PlayStation 4 titles online. In the latest issue of Famitsu(translated by Kotaku), Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida said that it would have been "absurd" to keep the service free, considering the "large investment of resources" Sony has made for online infrastructure.

"The main pillar for the PS4 will be online play. We're developing many new ways to play and connect which requires a large investment of resources," Yoshida said.

"Considering the cost, to try to keep such a service free and consequently lower the quality would be absurd. We decided that if that's the case, then it would be better to receive proper payment and continue to offer a good service

I believe they are allowing developers to choose if their games are free to play or not, typically MMO's would fall under that

PS4: Publishers Decide if Free-to-Play Needs PS Plus

Sony has confirmed that not every multiplayer game for the PlayStation 4 will require PlayStation Plus, as publishers will be able to decide what happens with free-to-play titles.

In an interview with Polygon, SCE Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida confirmed that this would be the case before revealing that Sony Online Entertainment has already decided its MMOs won't require players to have a PS Plus subscription.

"As far as free-to-play games are concerned, it?s a publisher?s decision whether they put it inside or outside of the PlayStation Plus requirements," he said.

Free-to-play games for the PlayStation 4 that won't require you to have a PlayStation Plus subscription are currently confirmed to include DC Universe OnlinePlanetSide 2, Blacklight: Retribution and Warframe.

So yeah......

More and more these news are starting to make me think if AMD was already in talks with Sony and Microsoft when they announced Bulldozer, since they sacrificed the single-threaded workflows and hoped the new era consoles will catch up with software for the multi-threaded arch they have going now. If that really is the case...win-win for everyone. For console makers and for AMD.

It?s not an across the board proclamation, but both as of right now it appears PlayStation Plus will not be required for any free-to-play titles.

The part you have put in bold just highlights it's an assumption that all F2P games will be like this, it's entirely up to the developers

Uhm, the PS3 also has 8 cores, 7 of which available to devs, 1 core more and they are completely confused? haha

Trolling and feeding cleaned.

Let's stay on topic people.... this is about the PS4 and what the devs think about it's hardware.

PS3 has 1 actual CPU core, it has 7 SPEs with one reserved for the OS which technically aren't "cores".

Different architecture, But its the same idea as cores for x86.

It has 9 threads, just like an octo-core x86 has 8 threads. So they actually have a thread less to deal with.

Normally I would send you this via PM but this goes to everyone else as well.

If you se someone breaking the rules it's best to just REPORT and IGNORE.

Commenting or disagreeing with them will only star trouble which will end up with ALL parties involved with warnings or temporary bans depending on your current status.

The SPEs are specialised at executing fixed instructions, they aren't general purpose like a regular CPU. Yes it has 7 threads but they are completely different.

Yes and where do you run your processes on? Threads right?

Dual core hyper threading X86 are seen as 4 cores too :/

I'm only assuming they're taking this new found power, which both consoles have, at least the cores part, as something new because it's guaranteed unlike developing on the PC where they'd have to probably develop for 2 cores on average usually, these days.

I'm looking forward to seeing what happens and if they use them properly

I suspect they will just use them in the same way they used SPE on CELL but it should free up more resources as the GPU is an ALU monster and PS4 has a dedicated audio chip.

I bought my console for this generation, bought a brand new sealed Super Nintendo, because I simply don't give a single **** about this generation, PS4, or Xbox.

May I ask why? Is it price?

Given the cost of buying a brand new in box SNES these days, I doubt it
