Scroogled: Google places ads directly in GMail

Recommended Posts

Nothing is free in life. Someone has to pay for things. I honestly never look at ads.

There's a fine line in advertising, one Google crosses quite often. When your ads have the potential to get in user's way, that's when you know you've crossed that line.

MS fan boy Dot Matrix speaks the truth, he speaks for all Gmail users, eventhough he probably doesn't even use it, or ever will. What a great piece of wisdom there /s Quickly let's all switch to Outlook and live in la-la land, where Ads are just "right", the experience is "super" and nothing ever goes wrong. Hoora /s

Yes you are right, it's also not much different when MS spams me repeatedly about their offers, products, failure surface and Office 365 software! Its totally not the same "spam" concept you speak of. Google is t he devil; first they give us an amazing Gmail experience, now they subtly advertise with options and in settings to opt out, oh the torture of a good service /s

Anything legitimate to add, or do you just wanna /s all day as of it makes you cool...

How funny ! /s Why is it that almost "always" its Spenser, Bajirav, VCfan, Dot Matrix & Siah that come troll google treads with uninformed/stupid comments? For the pure sake of making Google look bad, whilst praising the oh so glory of MS? #Just saying (its so common by now). It's getting old  ...

As long as they only show up in the "promotions tab" as indicated in that screenshot, I couldn't care less. I really like the new tabs feature too, does a good job of getting all the crap that technically isn't spam out of my main inbox.

But I guess google bashing is the "in" thing right now :p

this is why I don't use gmail. Im using IE11 on W8.1. I log in, it redirects me to the HTML version, then tells me to upgrade my browser to a modern browser, Chrome. **** off

You are using a pre-release browser, you are being ridiculous. I'm sure when IE11 comes out final it will work properly.

So when I use Chrome 30.x dev build, will I get same message? No right. Google is the dirty Evil

Really really desperate!! These are label-based and how the F if someone can tell me that the 95% of the GMail users going to even know that these are ads and not genuine mails?! Majority doesn't use Labels. They don't even know there are Labels. Ludicrous!

I would love to see all these threads I've been trolling. I didn't even slam google for this move in this thread. I said its like spam but that its their choice as they're providing a free service. You just don't care to read and then post drivel.

So you are using a new version of IE on a Google site that is not fully supported yet or recognized and it tells you to use a modern browser like Chrome (suggests Chrome sense you are on a Google site) and you have issues.  Color me shocked.  I have seen these messages before on a lot of sites using pre-released copies of browsers.  This is no different other than suggesting to use Chrome.  And some sites I have browsed of Microsofts with FF, I have to switch to IE because they will not work in FF or open properly.  But hey, Google is the bad one.

Exactly. GMAIL is not fully setup to support IE 11 yet.  I have seen that message before when using IE10 and other versions if IE.  It will change/go away.

So when I use Chrome 30.x dev build, will I get same message? No right. Google is the dirty Evil

No, because like many MS sites, GMAIL is probably set to better use Chrome.  And I highly doubt GMAIL is the only site out there getting/displaying that kind of message.

Found a thing in lifehacker that tells how to disable these ads.  So.. it's not that big of a deal.. It is the same premise as MS throwing Ads all over the Xbox Screen, or W8 apps., except on those it can't be turned off.

Therefore google wins.

Oh pull the other one, IE11 is an unreleased beta product, they just haven't updated Gmail for it's new UA string yet. This move is due to the ridiculous number of people still using IE8.

Also: Cry me a river. I guess though the fact that this thread was started by who it was tells the story though, I bet he hasn't gone on a rant about all the advertising in Windows 8 apps that you can't turn off.

This doesnt use labels.  It puts the ads in a Promotions tab.  Completely different and if you hold your mouse over the tab, it tells you what they are for.  And the screenshot in the OP says the ads are based of your settings.

Exactly.  Just people who do not like something spewing out nonsense to support when they hate a certain product/company.

I class this in the same league as those advertisers who advertise using big "BEGIN DOWNLOAD" buttons on software download websites (download.com is a pain for this).

You're right on point with your posts today. If I was you, I'd be watching your back for a moderator, I'm sure they're not too far behind. Go chill off before you do something you regret that gets your posting powers taken away.

For those having trouble with this, the remedy is quite simple. Gear icon/Settings/Inbox Tab then deselect everything put Primary. Scroll down to the bottom and click Save.

Done and Done.

And/or go in to Ad Settings and opt out of interest based ads.

As long as they:

  • Can be disabled through your settings
  • Show up only on your Promotions tab
  • Don't show up if you don't have the tabs feature enabled

I'm kinda ok with it. Not something I'd actually want but they don't get in my way at all, so there.

Call me when Google gets as low as embedding ads inside every mail you send, in the old Hotmail style. Now that would be atrocious.

When they distract or confuse the user, then they are "in the way".

When they distract or confuse the user, then they are "in the way".

So, they are not distracting the user...since they are put in a separate tab...and they are not confusing the user either as tells you why you are getting the ads.

And that is not what I would call, in the way.  In the way is when they are placed in areas on the webpage that interfere with what you are trying to see, are to big, or popup.

And how many users do you think read what's on screen before clicking?

It pops up at them.  They are notifications designed to get peoples attention to inform them of whats going on.   If they do not read it, then it is the user's fault....no one elses.

And most people I know pay attention to what is on their screen.  I have my grandparents asking me things all the time and its normally about MS notifications.
