Thermistor resistance problem

Recommended Posts

Maybe someone here with some EE knowledge can help.

I have a dryer that has a thermistor in it that senses the temperature of the heated air course. Well the drier started throwing a thermistor open error. I pulled the thermistor out and put a multi-meter on it, checked the resistance, at 70 degrees it should be around 10 K Ohm, which it shows on the readout.

Well here's where it gets odd, if I hold the meter on it reading the resistance it changes with temp ok, but if you blow moist air on it, it will go up in resistance with the temp then bam it goes to reading 0.000 Mega Ohm (yes the meter says mega ohm)

this fits what the dryer is doing, because it would run for a minute or two then boom error code saying thermistor open

what would cause this? I already ordered a replacement one, just wondering what would cause it to basically what appears to be short out by blowing on it... it's just your standard glass encased thermistor, no noticeable cracks or anything in it... the part almost looks like a glass sealed Zener diode the way its made

This is what the thermistor package looks like. just a glass encased one

This is what the resistance is suppose to be like, this isn't the chart for the thermistor in my dryer, the scale is wrong, but it follows the same curve, higher the temp the lower the resistance
