how can i make a virtual microphone?[java]

I want to program a application for my desktop which will display its self as a microphone at the same time as intercept the real one... and I was wondering how I would go about it ? 

FOR EXAMPLES... 

I say hello :) hello.... my microphone takes that in...and the program processes it and gives out the out put ... but it has to do the virtual microphone thing as it will be sent to an unrelated piece of software :) any ideas where to start?
