Self Publishing now allowed on Xbox One.

It's finally good to see them announcing plans firmly. I'm personally really excited about using a retail X1 as a dev kit, I can't wait to try and whip something up on there.

EDIT: If Indie's can use the 'cloud' in their games free of charge then, mind completely blown. That's asking for a metric ton though.

I want to see what this means, I guess we will find out more in late August.  As it sounds now this is a great step and I am excited about it.

I would like to see Microsoft make it free, but I doubt they could do that.

In the meantime there is going to be an Interview with Mark Whitten next week on Major Nelson's Podcast and he is going to talk a little about this, but probably won't say the big things as we will need to wait until GamesCom.

I knew Microsoft was going to do something like this because of what was mentioned by someone at Lionhead Studios, but AudioBoxer and ThelegendofMart wouldn't stop with their fanboy dreams and understand that Microsoft isn't reveling everything on May 21st, and E3, there is still a lot more to come before the launch in November.

I'm disappointed, no-one has found a negative spin on this yet! I'll check back in a few hours when someone will find a way of saying MS has done SOMETHING wrong with this.

Xbox One should permit this as it only generates them money. As for a pile of useless games to wade through, leave the search able to find all titles. The top menus on the console are 'best matched' based on what the cloud determined you & your XBL buddies like for game types/styles.

The only thing negative sounding is that people think this is another 180 like the DRM stuff when it's not.  They never gave us details about the XB1 store till now, though they dropped lots of hints at E3 and at BUILD.

Looks like Microsoft has allowed Self Publsing on the Xbox One.

I personally do NOT want Xbox Live looking like a junkyard (one of the things I liked about the PS3)..

What's your thoughts on the matter

http://news.cnet.com/8301-10797_3-57595362-235/microsoft-to-allow-developers-to-self-publish-xbox-one-games/

I think they should charge a substantial amount($500?) instead of the usual $99 to discourage junk.

NOT AVAILABLE AT LAUNCH !!!111!!!!

I personally would rather have the ability to find a gem in a self-published title and deal with the clutter rather than not have any at all.

Its a good move by Microsoft and I'm hoping the studio behind OddWorld bring it over now :)

To the OP, Microsoft have said these self-published games will be in their own category 'Indies' so no extra clutter of useless games if you don't go in that category.

Have they really? Stop trying to create a negative spin. You haven't read anything.

"My goal is for it to just show up in the marketplace," he told us. "Of course there will be different pivots inside of that. There will be everything from what are we curating, kind of like spotlight content, to the normal discoverability stuff like recommendations, what's trending, what's got a lot of engagement on the platform. And you'd be able to find that content in any of those. There wouldn't be any difference based on what type of game it was. Then of course there will be other type of pivots where you can go and look at whether its a genre of game or any other. But you shouldn't think of it as there's an indie area and a non-indie area."

No, they said the opposite of that but don't let facts get in the way of your expert commentary.

How was my post negative? I'm supportive of this decision to allow self-publishing.

Also they haven't said much really, this is the only official statement I've seen. If you have others feel free to post.

Microsoft's VP of Xbox Marc Whitten said:

"Our vision is that every person can be a creator. That every Xbox One can be used for development. That every game and experience can take advantage of all of the features of Xbox One and Xbox LIVE. This means self-publishing. This means Kinect, the cloud, achievements. This means great discoverability on Xbox LIVE. We'll have more details on the program and the timeline at gamescom in August."

diezel78 (Xbox 360 tag)

showeezee (PSN tag)...

Just in case anyone is interested... (though nobody cares)

This also includes all my "debate enemies"....

I will more than likely be the weakest link on any team...

The fact they were hinting at allowing 3rd party app development to hit the XB1 meant that we were going to expect the same type of store as with Windows and WP.

For those defending Microsoft that they never voiced their plans regarding indies, bull****. This change is 5 years late at least.

About time too (Y)  Time to suck some indie shaped eggs and get them back on side.

Backflip after backflip. Instead of trying badly to be like Apple, how about just listening to what your users want in the first place, hmm?

Backflip? They are back flipping on a feature they already said they would be announcing later at the may reveal. Haters are entertaining.

Just because Sony doesn't have a brand or name on PSN for indies, doesn't mean they don't support them or give them the same access to the features of the PS3.

I really can't understand why people in the Microsoft camp don't want support for indies as much as they get elsewhere. It really boggles my mind. Even if you hate their attitude towards the industry or how pompous they can be, they are undeniably important to the medium. If it weren't for them, the 360 would have died much sooner because Microsoft gave up on 1st party support a long time ago to move developers onto X1. The X1 can't survive on Halo, Gears, Fable and Forza sequels and if that is all you want the console won't stand a chance against the PS4 either.

All of the above goes for Sony too, but they at least realise how important indies are and have embraced them whilest Microsoft have gone from pioneering them to pushing them away. The last few years Sony has had terrible AAA releases. Big names that fell flat on scores and sales. Didn't really matter in the end because they had Journey which won just about every award going. But it's not all about scores/sales, indies are important because they push genres into new areas or make you completely rethink what games are capable of.

Some people really need to look further afield than FPS & killstreaks etc. It's damaging to the industry never mind completely mind numbing.

No more fake excuses from console hackers . But...but...homebrew.

Homebrew is more than just creating indie games. Even Microsoft knows this and took inspiration from XBMC when designing the 360's dashboard/features.

Ok, the internet is just full of crazy posters, but it has literally hit joke status for these people that will bash MS for positive announcements.

I don't get it. Heck its even so called game 'journalists' and those that post daily gaming news spouting some very strange reactions. Literally MS can do nothing right in their eyes even when it is right. Sony hit the jackpot. They get to say very little and nothing sticks to them.

I just have to laugh when MS starts making positive announcements and many of the loudest voices crap on it. This is what the 'console wars' have created. Its in the gaming media and its all over the internet in general (regarding console war bs, not MS specifically)

PSN didn't really cater to the "indie" crowd, they catered to the small studios that liked to call themselves indie. XBLIG was the only true playground for indie developers on consoles. And it was horrible. and until Sony decides to let people use their regular PS4's as devkits, they'll still be behind MS on the indie dev support.

So no. MS never was behind Sony.

if those small studios don't slice their revs for another publishers, they are indies.
