There's nothing quite like the rich, invigorating smell of fresh brewed coffee, and it tastes even better when you stop by your favorite coffee shop and find out that your cup of joe is free. That's just what happened at a Tim Hortons in downtown Edmonton, Canada, on Monday after a man generously paid it forward and bought large coffees for the next 500 customers, surprising coffee-loving patrons until 8 o'clock the next morning.

The kindhearted man, who appeared to be in his mid-to-late 20s, asked how many cups of coffee the restaurant typically sold in a day. He then asked the cashier to add 500 large coffees to his order, which included a double-double and a Boston cream doughnut for himself. With a quick swipe of his debit card, he paid the nearly $900 bill and walked away. Manager Joanne Averion told Yahoo! Shine he wasn't a regular customer, and he didn't want to be identified. "We were trying to ask why," she said, "but he didn't want to give a reason and wanted to be anonymous."

Customers were stunned and in disbelief when they found out their cup of Tim Hortons coffee was free that day. "Some were asking why, and so we would tell them the story," explained Averion. "They couldn't believe it, and so we would show them the receipt proving it."

She added that she had previously seen customers make kind gestures by purchasing the next five or so coffees for people in line, but never 500. "It was huge," said Averion. "He's amazing and surprised everybody. We hope we can see him again to tell him thank you."

According to the Canadian Press, the mystery man's gesture has inspired at least five other generous java buyers to pay it forward this week. In Ottawa, a city bus supervisor, who is soon to retire, bought 500 morning coffees, and another Good Samaritan bought a round of 500 coffees in Calgary, too. Tim Hortons spokesperson Michelle Robichaud told the Canadian Press, "If ever there was going to be a copycat, this is the one you would want."

Sure, buy a bunch of coffee for strangers, but Ill bet none of them offered a single dime to a homeless person sleeping in the street

Chill. . .

You'll have to explain the logic of this one.

I always like it when I see reports of totally random acts of kindness. It's gotta be a good day when you find out your morning coffee was totally free.

I'll bet they didn't paint their toenails or lick a pack of stamps either. What jerks! (random much?)

Why so pessimistic? Because of one man's kind gesture you automatically assume it's one-sided? How do you know this man doesn't give money to the homeless and countless other charities. The rich aren't all greedy and selfish.

I would do something like that if I had the money. :)

well, if you compare yourself with an average joe from Rwanda, you are probably much richer than him (avg annual salary is more or less $900, less then $3 per day). So yeah, you do have the money to do something (although in a small scale) like this; it's just a matter of perspective. :)

Wow, that is a cool story.  Of course, I've tasted Tim Horton's coffee, and I must say it was probably the worst cup of hot brown water I've ever had.  But I guess most Canadians really like it. In any event, kudos to the generous fellow!

So you base your opinion on 1 cup of coffee at one particular location. Why blame the whole company when you can blame the actual employee who made the cofee with too much water

Easy bro.  When did I say anything about receiving the coffee from an employee at a coffee shop? I didn't say that I only had one cup either.  I had a friend from Canada who brought a whole case of the stuff to our office telling everyone how awesome it was.  I found it to be lousy, pot after pot.  I even tried brewing it myself, a little stronger.  It didn't help.  So yes, I'm sorry, the whole company makes subpar coffee from my point of view.

something similar happened to me a few months ago. I pulled in a tim hortons drivethru to pay for my cup of coffee, and I was informed by the pretty little girl at the window that the woman in front of me had paid for my order. If I knew I would have ordered breakfast ;)

the stuff you make in your coffee machine tastes nothing like the coffee you get brewed from an actual tim hortons location. i dont know what it is, maybe they brew it at a specific temperature, and some oils get released , but its not the same at all. the stuff you brew yourself tastes like absolutele crap, i agree. i wouldnt wait sometimes 30 minutes in the morning at the drivethru if i can make it myself.

it's not just one cup at one location. go have a coffee at any Horton's location and it will be garbage.

Those up here that want a good cup of coffee go to the McDonalds drive-thru

Yeah I know, I never drink coffee from Tim Horton, but to say it's absolute crap ... I don't know, it wasn't in my area. Wasn't great either.

I bet you felt good throughout the day knowing someone did that for you. I would have.

I've done that for several people (luckily they didn't buy much). I started doing it when someone did it for me. I should hope that it was paid forward by you.
